EDUC-1300-011 First Year Seminar - Learning Framework

Prerequisites

Course Description

A study of the: research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition and motivation; factors that impact learning; and application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g., learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to continually draw from the theoretical models they have learned.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

  • Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to: tardiness/leaving early; electronic device noises; talking during lectures; abusive, offensive or disrespectful behavior/language.
  • Emails sent to your instructor must be addressed and signed. Emails, like all academic work, should be proofread, should not include slang or abbreviations, and should not resemble text messages.
  • Turn off cell phones or put them on silent during class.
  • Any student caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive a failing grade.  According to the Amarillo College Student Code of Conduct, plagiarism is the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another's work and the acknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one's own written work.

Grading Criteria

Your course grade will be determined by the following percentages/assignments:

10% Attendance/Participation
30% Daily Work/Homework
  Includes discussion postings, lecture reponse worksheets, and drop box assignments in the AC Connect course
20% AC Connect quizzes completed by deadline
10% Enrichment Activities
  You must attend/participate in 3 Enrichment Activities and complete a short worksheet on each experience. You will schedule and complete your enrichment activities outside of regular class time.
30% Career Project
  The Career Project will be completed in three parts: a job shadow, an annotated bibliography identifying key research findings about your chosen career, and a paper/in-class presentation.

Final letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = Below 60

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement in college courses.  It is the responsibility of the student to attend each class meeting.  Students are also expected to log in and complete all assignments according to the class calendar.  If an extenuating circumstance prevents a student from turning an assignment in on time, it is the student's responsibility to let the instructor know immediately. The decision to amend a due date or accept a late assignment will be left up to the instructor and will only be considered in extreme cases.

IN-CLASS ATTENDANCE
Attend all scheduled in-class meetings (Tuesdays 6-7:15 in Warren Hall, Room 112) and actively participate in discussions.  Turn off cell phones or put them on silent during class. Cell phones are to be kept in a purse, backpack, or pocket at all times during class.

ONLINE ATTENDANCE
Keep in mind that grades are not given.  Grades are earned based on student performance.  Please note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester.  Unless otherwise notified, assignments and exams are due on the dates stated in the syllabi. Some items such as disucssion forums will not be available after the date/time deadline.

Please read your calendar carefully and be aware of when things are due. For the most part, the online portion of the class will run from Tuesday evenings thru Saturday evenings.  In other words, all course work for that particular module will typically be due by 11:55 pm on Saturday night—although some coursework will be due earlier (11:55 on Thursday night). Also, note that the Week 14 due dates differ from the rest of the submission dates. I understand that life happens and there are emergencies that come up; however, you have an entire week to complete the homework, so please don’t wait until the last minute (Thursday night and/or Saturday night) to start your homework for the week.
