Study of the pathology and general health management of diseases and injuries across the life span. Topics include etiology, symptoms and the physical and psychological reactions to disease and injuries.

Course Objectives

Subject Description

By the end of this semester, students are expected to complete and satisfy all of the following learning objectives with a minimum of 75% competency based on the completion of quizzes, clinical exercises, major exams, and a comprehensive final exam.

Learning Outcomes & Objectives: Upon satisfactory completion of this course of study in pathophysiology, students will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge  of diseases and related terminology which will enable competent communication with members of the medical community, allied health professionals and surviving family members.
  2. Describe the benefits from postmortem examination of human remains.
  3. Identify the pathological conditions and etiological factors which require special procedures in the removal, handling, preparation and disposition of human remains.
  4. Understand the relationship between the disease process and pre-embalming analysis.
  5. Distinguish environmental factors, physical, psychosocial, and cognitive characteristics of various diseases and conditions; and identify implications of therapeutic interventions for common diseases and conditions.
  6. To provide adequate knowledge to relate embalming, pathology, restorative art and other related subject areas.
  7. To foster healthful living habits through an understanding of the normal structure and function of human anatomical structures.
  8. To be able to facilitate communication with members of other allied health areas.
  9. To develop respect for human remains.
  10. To promote an appreciation of and an interest in the human body as a subject for independent study and continuing intellectual growth.

Students must have a combined score of 75% or better for a passing grade.

920 - 1,000 points = A
830 - 919 points    = B
750 - 829 points    = C
Below 749 points  = F

Expected Student Behavior

If a student is having a problem with the course policies or with the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Director of the Mortuary Science Program (Scott Rankin), the Chairperson of the Allied Health Division (Mr. Bill Crawford), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction (Dr. Russell Lowry-Hart), or the College President (Dr. Paul Matney), in that order.
The student should follow the proper order for chain of command.

Academic dishonesty will be taken seriously and will be handled in accordance with the policies of Amarillo College.

Grading Criteria

Students must have a combined score of 75% or better for a passing grade.  Percentages for the final grade will be calculated as follows:

Quizzes = 200 points.  6 quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  The five highest quiz scores will be used to calculate the quiz point total.
Exams = 400 points.  5 major exams consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams and true/false questions.  The four highest exam scores will be used to calculate the exam point total.
Clinical exercises = 150 points.  6 Clinical Exercises will consist of discussion and/or case studies.  The five highest exercises will be used to calculate exercise point total.
Final exam = 250 points.  This will consist of a comprehensive exam consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams, and/or true and false type questions.  This will be a minimum of 150 questions to a maximum of 200 questions.

â–º No make-ups will be allowed for quizzes, exams, or clinical exercises unless Amarillo College computer systems exhibit technical problems; only then will extensions be scheduled by the instructor.
â–º If you have scheduling conflicts, personal computer problems, or miss any assignment due dates, a grade of zero will be given for that assignment.


 

Attendance

Although this will be an online format, regular on-line attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to meet assignment due dates.  No make-ups will be given for any missed assignment, quiz, or exam. This will also include any personal computer problems or scheduling conflicts.
