Course Description

Offers instruction and practice designed to aid the actor in achieving optimum vocal performance through exploration of vocal mechanics and proper breathing, projection, resonance, placement, articulation and characterization. Required of theatre majors.

\ No textbook required.  We will refer to Freeing the Natural Voice by Kristin Linklater.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) dialect work will also be studied.  Required of theatre majors.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to be present and participate in the class discussions and exercises.  There will be ouside classwork, esp., on dialects.  Students will also write a critique over each of the productions presented this semester including the Merely Players production.

Grading Criteria

\ A = 90-100

\ B = 80- 89

\ C = 70 - 79

\ D = 60 - 69

\ F = 59 and below

\ 3 Critiques avg. = 10%

\ Dialects avg. = 35%

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for the succesful completion of this class.

\ A student is allowed two (2) absences with no consequence to the final grade.  For each absence after those, the final grade will be lowered one letter grade.  On the sixth (6th) absence the student will receive a failing grade.

Calendar

\ Since this class is a personal development class, the schedule will be determined by the students' abilities and comprehension of the material.
