Expected Student Behavior

  1. \ The student should read assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss topics covered in class. Students will be called on to share their understanding of topics.

  3. \ Assigned homework is to be completed before class. A grade of zero will be given if not turned in on time.
  4. \
  5. \ All students are responsible for their own work.  Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated and is punishable to the extent that AC allows. 
  6. \
  7. \ All conversation should be related to the discussion at hand and comments should not be directed toward specific individuals.  Please refrain from private conversations or any other activities which might distract other learners. 
  8. \
  9. \ I want all students to be successful.  Cell phones distract from the learning environment.  For this reason, they should be turned off and put away out of view upon entering the classroom.  If you must carry a pager or phone to class for emergency purposes, please see me in advance.  If you bring a laptop or other technological device to class, it should not be used for purposes other than taking class notes.

Grading Criteria

  1. \ Each examination will be weighted and will have a specific value of points awarded for correct answers.
  2. \
  3. \ Additional assignments may also be given with a specified value or points.
  4. \
  5. \ Short, unannounced quizzes will be given at the beginning of class from time to time.  The content of the quiz will be from the previous class.  There is no make up grade for a missed quiz. 
  6. \
  7. \ At the end of the course, all possible points from examinations and other assignments will be totaled. This total will be the maximum possible points a student could earn.
  8. \
  9. \ The number of points earned by a student will be divided by the maximum possible points for the course. The quotient will be expressed as a percent and converted to a final grade.

\ The grading scale for this course is:
\ A = 90 - 100
\ B = 80 - 89
\ C = 70 - 79
\ F = score less than 69.5

\

\ If a student is absent for a regularly scheduled examination, the student may take a makeup examination but the highest grade a student can earn is 75%. All material given in this course will be tested during the  major examinations.

\

\ Keep in mind that grades are not given.  Grades are EARNED based on student performance.  Often the instructor plays no role in the grading process other than recording.  Please be careful to note the requirements for earning the grade you desire and act accordingly throughout the semester. 

Attendance

\ A student who plans to pass this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture sessions.  Students chronically late for class or those with excessive absences may be at risk for passing this course.  Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be addressed on an individual basis with the instructor.
\ I want you to be successful and your attendance is critical to your success.  In order to be fair, there is no distinction between an excused and an unexcused absence.

Three or four regular examinations will be required for this course.

Final examination is comprehensive.

Week 8-10  Muscles of Respiration, Lung Volumes and Subdivisions

Week 11-13  Compliance, Surface Tension and Airway Resistance
November 13  Exam 4
Week 14-16  Alveolar Ventilation, Dead Space Ventilation and Diffusion
Final Exam Week December 5-9

Please note this is only a tentative schedule.  It may be changed or adjusted at the instructor's discretion at any time. 

 

 

 

Additional Information

REMEDIATION POLICY

The instructor will meet with students who perform poorly on exams.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the exam.  The plan may include, but will not be limited to:

  1. Retaking the exam.
  2. Research of exam topics.
  3. Written discussion of topics.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE

A student, who develops a problem with a course police or the course instructor, whould first try to resolve the problem with the instructor or program director.  If the problem cannot be resolved at this level, the student should go to the Dean of Health Sciences, the Dean of Student Services, and the college President, in that order.
