Course Description

Origin and development of the U.S. Constitution, structure and powers of the national government including the legislative, executive and judicial branches, federalism, political participation, the national election process, public policy, civil liberties and civil rights.

Student Performance

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

 

1. Explain the origin and development of constitutional democracy in the United States.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the federal system.

3. Describe separation of powers and checks and balances in both theory and practice.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government.

5. Evaluate the role of public opinion, interest groups, and political parties in the political system.

6. Analyze the election process.

7. Describe the rights and responsibilities of citizens

8. Analyze issues and policies in U.S. politics.

\ Senior students in the Adrian ISD Dual Credit US Government course are expected to fulfill their duties and responsibilities as dual credit students.  In other words, show up, do your work, and do it well and on time!!  As well as contribute to classroom discussions, be respectful of other's opinions, and collaborate on group projects.

Grading Criteria

\ 6 Major Tests:  10% each for a total of 60% of the final grade

\

\ Projects & Assignments:  40% of the final grade

\

\ All grading policies of Adrian ISD will be followed.

Attendance

\ The attendance laws and policies of the state of Texas and Adrian ISD will be followed.

Additional Information

Government 2305 will be an introductory college Government course. It is designed for students who want a rigorous but practical view of American government and politics. Students will be expected to research and analyze primary source documents and important examples of political thought as well as contemporary public policy issues.
