Course Description

Basic mechanical skills and repair techniques common to most fields of industrial maintenance. Topics include application of precision measuring instruments and general safety rules common in industry, including lock-out/tag-out. Practice of basic layout and piece part measurement while using standard measuring tools is also emphasized.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to have the specified learning materials and equipment no later than the third class session.The student is required to take notes during class, these notes may be used during test.

Safety Policy, PPE and attendance.

Safety is everyone's job,and it starts before you enter the shop area. A machine shop has rotating machinery,high voltage electrical equipment,hot metal,sharp metal and chemicals,all of which can harm or even kill you.Professionlism is another habit that all of us must excell at. That is why the rules described below are needed.

Rule#1. All students are required to have signed the attendance sheet and be setting at table at the start of class.

Rule#2. No headgear of any type are allowed in classroom, hats or caps may be worn in lab.

Rule#3. Break time will be set by instructor

Rule#4. Instructor will set break time for class. When break is over all students must be back at work assignments.

Rule#5. All students will participate in clean up, instructor will assign duties to each student.

Rule#6. All students will respect other student and instructors.

Rule#7. No food or drink in shop.

Rule#8. If you make a mess you clean it up.

Rule#9. No tobacco products of any type will be used in classroom or lab.

Rule#10. Students will have all required tools and classroom materials each day class meets.

Rule#11. Only Safety glasses' with side shields, that meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1 spec will be allowed.

Rule#12. Only long pants are allowed. No baggy pants,pants that allow body parts to be exposed, or torn pants.

Rule#13. Only College approved short sleeved or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed in both the classroom and lab. These shirts must be buttoned and tucked into pants.

Rule#14. No open toed shoes of any type are allowed either in classroom or on shop floor,students should wear work boots or work shoes.

Rule#15. Hair over shoulder length needs to be secured safely with a hat, cap or hairnet.

Rule#16. No necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, rings or watches are to be worn in shop.

Rule#17. No horseplay of any type will be tolerated.

Rule#18. Any vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.

Rule#19. Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Failure to comply with rules #1-#16 will result in the following disciplinary actions.

First offense. The student will receive a verbal reprimand from instructor and, be withdrawn from the class for that period receiving no grade for that day.

Second offense. The student will receive a written reprimand from instructor, removed from the class for two class periods reviving no points for either day. Any quizzes or test that occur during those classes cannot be made up and will counted as zero points.

Third offense. The student will be suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receive a FAILING grade for that class.

Failure to comply with rules #17 thru #19 will result in the student being immediately suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receiving a FAILING grade for that class.

Tools, Equipment,

Tools and equipment specified for this class and any recommended preliminary class in the Machining Technology Curriculum are to be furnished by the student and be with the student during all lab activities. failure to have tools will result in the student receiving no lab grade for that class period. All student tools should marked with the students initials for easy identification, these tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.

Grading Criteria

Course Evaluations:

Students should complete all performance tasks on time at REQUIRED MASTERY LEVEL. Tasks, projects, and various assignments will be scored based on time; accuracy; neatness; completeness; procedure; skill; detail; motivation and attitude; safety practices; clean up; care of manuals, logbooks, and references; and other grading criteria. No task shall be rated until assignment is complete and correct. Complete shall include condition and cleanliness of equipment; clean up of work areas; tool condition and return of all supplies and materials to their proper location. Correct means that projects meets all print specifications in order to be graded.

Final (Overall) Grade Policy:

The final overall grade will be computed by adding the points earned as follows: Note Shop Practices includes the following criteria. Safety, clean-up, math, print comprehension, process planning, time management, shop practices.

Makeup Policy

Students are responsible for getting notes from other students when absent. Lab activities will continue on schedule. Individuals will not receive credit for making up activities and there will be NO special lab sessions. Some work can be caught up during regular lab times. Missing lab activities may prevent individuals from completing lab projects.

Homework :TOOLING U/Quizzes, Projects and Final

TOOLING U/Homework will be from the TOOLING U Modules. Each module will end with a quiz. In order for the student to advance to the next module, he or she must succesfully pass the current subject (72% or above) being covered. All tooling-u modules for this class will be broken into eight groups with a calander date assigned to each group failure to meet the due date, which is the begining of that class period, for any one group will result in a 12.5% reduction of the entire class final grade. Two missed homework assignments will result in a 25% reduction of the entire class final grade. Three missed homework assignments will result in the student either having to withdraw from the class or recieve a failing grade for that class.

Final: A comprehensive in class final exam and lab project will be required. Any student failing to take the final exam will fail the course. The written exam will be open note only. The final project must be turned in no later than the end of that students last class period to recieve a grade.

The professional industrial worker understands the importance of being on time and having the required all the required tools and other materials as required to do the job, this professional also under stands the need to follow the rules as laid out by the company.That is why the rules listed below are given.
