Additional Information

Program Medical Director:  Darrell Morgan, MD

Program Director:  Doug Adcock, BS, LP, NREMT-P, CCEMT-P

Instructor:  Brandon K. Fansler, BS, LP, NRP / Julie Gwyn, BS, RN, EMT-B

Course Co-Requisite:

EMSP-1163-DC002.

Course Description:

Preparation for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic.  Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an emergency service or other specialized services.

Immunization Requirements:

In order to maintain compliance with Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, Rule §97.64 all immunization documentation must be on file with the EMSP program office within 10 DAYS of the first class session.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in dismissal from the class.  Refunds are subject to Amarillo College's policy.  These immunizations include:

  1. Tetanus-diphtheria within 10 yeas
  2. Measles (two doses) (preferably MMR vaccine)
  3. Mumps (preferably MMR vaccine)
  4. Rubella (preferably MMR vaccine)
  5. Hepatitis-B Immunization (3-injection series requiring 4-6 months to complete)
  6. Varicella (chickenpox)
  7. Influenza (if your clinical rotations occur during flu season:  October to May)

In addition, proof of a negative Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (within the last year) is required.

Students must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED certificate within 1 year of Course Completion date.  (Texas Department of State Health Services requirement for state certification.

Disability Statement:

Any student, who because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact AC disAbility Services (Student Service Center, room 119, phone 806-371-5436, as soon as possible.

Clinical Shifts:

Clinical shifts are selected from a scheduling website owned and operated by FISDAP (http://www.fisdap.net), costing approximately $15.00.  After a student is given access to the FISDAP site, clinical shifts MUST be chosen and completed as expeditiously as possible.  Attempting to choose a schedule late in the semester will likely result in an inability to create an appropriate schedule.  Failure to successfully complete clinical rotations will result in an "F" for both courses.

Criminal Background Check:

Prior to attending any clinical rotation, each student must submit to a criminal background check (a requirement imposed by the clinical sites - not Amarillo College).  This is only done online at http://www.precheck.com.  On this website, YOU MUST SELECT "ALLIED HEALTH" in order for your instructor to verify compliance.  You CANNOT go to clinical, and therefore CANNOT complete this course with a grade higher than "F" or "U" without approval through this process.  You must pay with a credit card or money order.  The cost is approximately $55.00.  Note:  A criminal history does not necessarily preclude you from clinical.  Honesty on the application is the best policy.

Cellular Telephones, Pagers, & Mobile Devices:

Pagers, telephones, and mobile devices are disruptive during class time.  These devices MUST be turned off/silent during class time.  If you feel that you will have an emergency during class time, leave the number of the high school campus secretary and they will contact you immediately.  TEXTING IS NOT ALLOWED DURING CLASS - NO EXCEPTIONS, PERIOD.  NO WARNINGS!

Telephone and other electronic devices are not to be used during quizzes or exams.  If a student is caught with a telephone or other electronic device during this time, cheating will automatically be assumed, and the student will receive a grade of "F" for the course.  Cheating will not be tolerated!

Withdrawing from a Course:

It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course.  Failure to officially withdraw will result in a grade of "F" in the course (EMSP 1501 AND 1163).  Students are not automatically dropped from their class roster as a result of nonattendance.

NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time Fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education.  (Senate Bill 1231) Rule §4.10.

Student Grievance Procedure:

A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor.  If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, the Chairman of the Allied Health Division, the Dean of Instruction, and the President - IN THAT ORDER.

Students will be required to abide by the Student Code of Conduct, which can be found in the AC Catalog.

Exceptions to the policies and procedures outlined in the syllabus, or syllabus cover, will be dealt with on an indivdiual basis at the discretion of the instructor.

The instructor reserves the right to change, amend, or modify this syllabus or course calendar with or without written notice.
