Student Performance

Course Objectives: This course is designed to acquaint students with the fundamental techniques and basic principles essential to effective communication in various business-related communication, including informative and persuasive presentations and  organizational communication. Through participation in assigned activities, you will:

  1. Demonstrate communication competence and critical thinking through an understanding of the foundational communication models.

  3. Demonstrate essential public speaking skills in professional presentations.

  5. Demonstrate written and oral competencies as it relates to employment (including job searches, interviews, interpersonal interaction, conflict management, leadership and performance appraisals.)

Expected Student Behavior

  • The use of cell phones in class is prohibited.  This includes phone calls, phones ringing, and text messaging in class.  Please feel free to take calls and text messages in the hallway.
  • Speeches are delivered on assigned days.  If you know well in advance, other arrangements might be possible. 
  • Tests will be made up only in emergencies.  Prior approval must be obtained from the instructor.
  • Late papers may be submitted no later than the following class meeting, with a 20 point penalty.
  • No substances or equipment in violation of Amarillo College’s Student Code of Life will permitted in speech communication courses.
  • Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct.  All speeches and papers presented should be the work of the student enrolled in the course.  Proper documentation should be made of materials cited from all sources.  If it is determined that a student has plagiarized a speech, paper, or exam, student will receive a grade of 0 and disciplinary proceedings against the student could ensue.
  • The instructor will not initiate administrative withdrawals.  If you stop attending class, but do not officially withdraw from the class, grades will be assigned based on the work required for the class, not just work completed.

Attendance

  • Because this is a performance/communication course, regular attendance is essential.  A participation/attendance grade will be given.  Perfect attendance = exemption from the Final Exam.  *3 tardies or early exits = 1 absence.
