An introduction to shorthand/notetaking principles. Practice in accurate reading and writing of notes to produce mailable documents from dictation.

    Student Performance

    The student will read notes at an acceptable minimum speed, take dictation at a minimum speed of 50 words per minute on new material, transcribe notes with 95 percent accuracy, and produce mailable documents from dictation.

    The student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed Performance Learning Objectives with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructors grading scale.

    Grading Criteria

    *TRANSCRIBE warm-up on a speed drill, take dictation at a designated rate, and then transform your shorthand notes into real words using the computer.    

    CLASS PROCEDURE:
    Homework – Study the rules for the level on which you are working; write your assigned homework at night or outside of class.  Write each lesson at least one time using your speedwriting rules for that level.  Writing your lesson two or three times will enable you to do even better on your drills and receive a higher homework grade. Your homework grade will depend on how many times you write it.

    LABELING INFORMATION:
    Please staple all of the papers in one lesson together; i.e.; all Lesson 1 papers are stapled in the upper-left corner.  Write your first and last name in the upper right-hand corner on the first line; and on the second line, write the lesson number.  On the first page, write how many times you did the homework lesson and circle the number. Inside of the lesson, skip a line between letters, paragraphs, or sentences and label each one.  This helps me to determine how many times you did the lesson.

    GRADING SCALE: 

    HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:
         100:     you write all letters, paragraphs, or sentences three (3) times each           
           85:     you write all letters, paragraphs, or sentences two (2) times each 
           70:     you write all letters, paragraphs, or sentences one (1) time each
             0:     you do not turn the homework in on the TUESDAY following its assignment.  Example:  lessons that you work on the week of January 21 and 23 (Tuesday and Thursday class) are due to me on Tuesday, January 28.  NO EXCEPTIONS! If you are absent on Tuesday, they are due the first day you return to class.

    The transcribed dictation take must receive a 95% accuracy grade on both shorthand accuracy and on transcription form accuracy to be counted toward your required dictation rate for a specific grade in the course.

    Your grade in this course will be based on the following:
                Level One                    20.0%
                Level Two                   30.0%
                Level Three                 50.0%
                                                       100% = Final Course Grade

    Each level consists of class drills, homework, and transcription.

    Attendance

    \ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.
