Course Description

Principles and concepts of mental health, psychopathology and treatment modalities related to the nursing care of patients and their families. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

1.  Discuss an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards and requirements relevant to caring for adults and families with behavioral disorders.

2.  Examine own personal and professional development in psychiatric mental health nursing practice.

3.  Determine activities that promote the development and practice of psychiatric mental health nursing.

 

Provider of Patient-Centered Care

1.  Discuss the development of confidence and necessary skills to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health for adult patients and families with behavioral disorders.

2.  Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning to plan holistic patient-centered care for adults and families with behavioral disorders.

3.  Summarize nursing concepts specific to meeting unique psychosocial needs of patients and families with behavioral disorders.

4.  Outline the principles of health teaching relevant to the care of adults and families with behavioral disorders.

Expected Student Behavior

Be punctual to all classes and/or laboratory events and any conferences scheduled

Prepare for class and/or lab experiences by completing outside assignments before class

Participate in class activities to learn clinical reasoning skills

Review and follow Student Test Administration Policy in the Student Handbook

A student achieving 75% or less on a module exam must schedule an individual test review with their instructor within one week of the exam.  This is a course requirement.  Failure to complete this task will result in course failure.

Achieve a cumulative average of 75% or above to pass the course

Must attend 90% of class meeting times to meet attendance requirement, this is 2 class periods.  Not meeting this requirement will result in course failure. Please notify instructor of record if you are absent

It is the students responsibility to review and/or obtain the missed material from a peer

HESI specialty exam review and remediation is mandatory.  Your remediation is due by the Friday before the final

Review student handbook for civility policy.

Grading Criteria

  1. A=90-100, B=80-89, C=75-79, D=60-69, F=below 60
  2. Three module examinations (23.33% each) = 70% of course grade.
  3. One EVOLVE mental health specialty examination will be administered toward the end of the semester.  HESI specialty exam for 5% of course. 
  4. HESI remediation is to be completed by the Friday before the final exam as verified by the instructor. (2 hours minimum to be spent in remediation)
  5. Remediation is a course requirement, if remediation is not completed you can’t pass the course.
  6. The final examination is 25% of the course grade.
  7. All students are to take the final to achieve their final points for the course grade.
  8. There is no rounding of grades.
  9. Make-up examinations are to be scheduled with the instructor and taken within one week (prior to the next class meeting) if a regularly scheduled examination is missed.  Make-up examinations may be administered to students who arrive late to a regularly scheduled exam.  Make-up examinations may be partially in essay form.
  10. If you are late to an examination you will have to schedule a make-up examination.

Attendance

Regular classroom attendance (90%) is required to meet the course objectives.  The 90% includes classroom and laboratory activities.
