An overview of the historical development of radiography, basic radiation protection, an introduction to medical terminology, ethical and legal issues for health care professionals, and an orientation to the profession and to the health care system. Patient assessment, infection control procedures, emergency and safety procedures, communication and patient interaction skills, and basic pharmacology are also included.

Student Performance

An overview of the historical development of radiography, basic radiation protection, an introduction to medical terminology, ethical and legal issues for health care professionals, and an orientation to the profession and to the health care system. Patient assessment, infection control procedures, emergency and safety procedures, communication and patient interaction skills, and basic pharmacology are also included.

End of course outcomes:  Define basic medical terms; identify ethical and legal standards; explain basic radiation protection practices; assess patient condition; describe infection control procedures; recognize and respond to emergency situations; and identify relevant pharmaceuticals and their applications.

Describe methods and techniques for administering various types of contrast agents.
 Identify and describe the routes of drug administration.
 Differentiate between the two major sites of intravenous drug administration.
 Identify, describe and document complications associated with venipuncture and appropriate actions to resolve these complications.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance Policy

1. Make every effort to resolve the concern directly with the course instructor/clinical instructor. The instructor should be contacted by the student before the conclusion of the course.

2.  If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the course instructor, the student should seek satisfaction from the immediate supervisor of the instructor within one week of the student–instructor meeting.

3. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the immediate supervisor of the instructor, the student should seek satisfaction from the Health Science Dean within one week of the student–supervisor meeting.

4. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the dean, the student should seek satisfaction from the Vice-President of Instruction within one week of the student – Dean meeting.

6. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the Vice-President of Instruction, the student should seek satisfaction from the college President within one week of the student–Vice-President meeting.

7. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the President, the student should seek satisfaction from the College Board of Regents at the next regular meeting of the Regents. The decision of the Regents will be final.

 
COURSE ETHICS
Each student will be required to prepare written assignments for credit and take written examinations as a part of this course. Plagiarism, academic dishonesty or any other unethical conduct WILL NOT be tolerated. Such behavior will result in the student receiving a final course grade of “F” regardless of other grades earned to- date.

Grading Criteria

Grading Distribution

The final course grade will  be computed as follows:

Average of Unit Examinations = 40%

Average of quizzes, homework, &/or other assignments/discussions (to be assigned at instructors discresion) = 30%

                      **note discussions consist of a written portion and a participation portion, students are expected to participate in both portions to receive the maxium grade

Final Comprehensive Examination = 30%

The following grade scale applies throughout this course:

A= 91.5 - 100

B= 82.5 - 91.4

C= 74.5 - 82.4

F= 0 - 74.4

A grade of "D" is not possible in this course!

It is not possible to raise a grade at the end of the course by asking for extra work to raise your failing grade.  I encourage each student to put forth ANY extra effort from the start of any course.

Coming into the classroom after a quiz has been handed out will prevent your taking that quiz and a grade of zero will be recorded, however, this will not count as an absence unless you are over 15 minutes late.

Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. It is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Class attendance will be recorded at each session. Only students who are present in class at the time a quiz/in class assignment is given will be allowed to participate. If the student is absent for one of these activities, they will receive a grade of zero for that assignment. Quizzes/In Class Discussions cannot be made up. In the case of a true emergency, and with advance notification to the instructor, arrangements for Unit Exams may be made at the instructor’s discretion and on a case by case basis.  Any unit exams that are made up will only be counted at 80%. All assignments will have a due date. It is expected the work will be turned in at least by that time. I do not accept late work. If the assignment is not turned in by the due date, a grade of zero will be assigned.
For each student who has no more than 1 absence or 1 late arrival, or leaving the class 15 minutes before the end of the scheduled class time,  the lowest quiz/discussion grade will be dropped. Late is defined as coming into the classroom 15 minutes after the start of the class.
