Course Description

A study of letterforms and typographic concepts as elements of graphic communication. Emphasis on developing a current, practical typographic knowledge based on industry standards.

Expected Student Behavior

\   Professionalism, discipline, attention, respect, participation, cooperation.
\    No cell phones or iPods or any electronic devices will be allowed for use in class.

Grading Criteria

\ Projects will be graded on timeliness, strength of concept, professionalism,
\     craftsmanship, and success in application of creative content.  Your overall attitude in the 
\     classroom will be a consideration as to your final grade.

\

\  MAKE-UP POLICY:  Deadlines are FINAL.  Under special circumstances, student must contact instructor for an 
\     opportunity to make up an assignment. A formal written document must be furnished with 
\    any request as to this matter.

Attendance

\ •  Students will be responsible for signing their own name on the attendance sheet in class.
\ •  Instructor will not be responsible for student’s failure to sign the class attendance sheet! 
\ •  If you do not sign the attendance sheet you will be marked absent. 
\ •  Absences of more than three class periods per semester will not be tolerated.  After the 
\    limit (again, of 3), final class grade will be reduced and the student will be advised by the
\    instructor concerning continuing or withdrawing from the course.
\ •  Students will attend end of school showing of portfolios by senior classmen.

  1. \ Introduction to type. Handouts and discussions.
    \ Introduce new project:  Type Portraits

  3. \ Continue with type portraits. Discuss and give examples of good type as it pertains to application.

  5. \ Work of type portraits. Go over mounting with class.
    \ Get type portraits ready for class and critique.
  6. \
  7. \ Go over more "good and bad type" examples. Start new "quote project"

  9. \ Work on quote project. Introduce clothing line: go over logo, ad and tag designs.

  11. \ Work on clothing line project, mount and have critiques on all 3 pieces.

  13. \ Introduce Poster design: Give the student the same Escher art and begin design.

  15. \ Poster project due. Critiques and give new project of announcement.
