\ In order to successfully complete the requirements for this course, the student must demonstrate the competencies as described by the following goals and objectives as evaluated by the faculty in the program.

\ A.  GOALS

\

\ Given the course textbook, personal notes, handouts, and other learning activities:

  1. \ The student will be familiar with NBRC Board Exam matrices and content; and understand branching logic as used in the Clinical Simulation Exam.
  2. \
  3. \ The student will be skilled in the technical aspects of successfully completing the computerized Entry-Level Board Exam, the Written Registry Exam, and the Clinical Simulation Exam.
  4. \

\ A minimum grade of a “C” must be earned by each student to successfully complete the goals of this course.

\ B.  MINIMUM COMPETENCIES

\ Given the course textbook, personal notes, handouts, and course presentations, the student should demonstrate competence in each of the specified areas by scoring 70% on the examination over the material listed.

  1. \ Strengthen the practical application of respiratory care procedures and theory.

  3. \ Identify individual areas of strength and weakness in respiratory care knowledge.

  5. \ Learn positive techniques for taking the NBRC exams.

  7. \ Become familiar with the NBRC exam matrices, content areas, and branching logic.

  9. \ Possess adequate computer skills to complete the Board Exams.

Expected Student Behavior

  1. \ Students are required to adhere to Amarillo College Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the publication “Student Rights and Responsibilities”, including item #11 which states “In order to provide a safe and healthy environment for employees and students, smoking is not permitted inside any College building.  For those who choose to smoke, receptacles will be placed at the entrance to each building.  The use of smokeless tobacco is prohibited in all College buildings.”  Those failing to perform according to established standards may be subject to disciplinary action as outlined in the previously mentioned publication.
  2. \
  3. \ In order to avoid disruption of lecture, students are expected to arrive for class on time and to be prepared for any assignments due.  Talking among students during lecture must be kept to a minimum since even small noises echo throughout the classroom. 
  4. \
  5. \ Cell phones, pager and mp3 players must be silenced and put away during all class periods. If any of these items are seen by the instructor during class, they will be confiscated and returned to the student when class is finished.  In addition, cell phones will not be used as calculators.  There are no exceptions.
  6. \
  7. \ Homework assignments that are not stapled together will not be accepted nor will the instructor provide the staples, paper clips, hole punchers, scantrons, pens, pencils, tissues, etc.

  9. \ In order to perform well in this class, it will be necessary to attend class and complete all assignments.

\ Make-up policy: There will be no make-up offered for the section quizzes.  The student will not be permitted to look at or keep any of the exams.

  1. \ Exams will be timed according to NBRC guidelines.

  3. \ Exams, homework and other items will have a specific value of points awarded.

  5. \ Nothing in this course will be curved.

  7. \ Additional assignments may also be given and points may be earned by the student for completion of the assignments.

  9. \ Failure to complete assigned homework on time will result in a maximum score of 70% on that assignment when completed.

  11. \ Grade categories will be weighted.  The grade book will compute the student’s earned score which will be expressed as a percent and converted to a final grade.  Scores below 70% will not be rounded.  ANY score lower than 70% will result is a grade of "F".  69.9% is not passing!  Scores above 70% will be rounded up, i.e. 84.8% will become 85%.

Attendance

\ A student who plans to succeed in this course should also plan to regularly attend and participate in all course sessions.  Students who are late for class or are absent will have class participation points deducted and may be at risk in passing the course.  Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be handled on an individual basis.
