STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Exemplary Educational Objectives): The following are the learning objectives of all Humanities 1315 courses taught at Amarillo College. This course is an exploration of the purposes and processes in the visual and performing arts (such as music, painting, architecture, drama, and dance) and the ways in which they express the values of cultures and human experience.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1.  Employ formal elements and principles to critically analyze various works of the visual and performing arts.

2.  Articulate the creative process of artistic works as expressions of human experience and cultural values.

3.  Demonstrate an understanding of the aesthetic principles that guide the creation of, and response to, the arts.

4.  Describe the relationship of the arts to everyday life.

Expected Student Behavior

\ All students are required to follow the AC Student Rights/Responsiblities Statement, and conduct themselves accordingly in all matters pertaining to this class.

\ Cell Phone/ Personal Computer Policy:  In order to not interrupt the class session, students are asked to turn off all cell phones and pagers prior to the beginning of class. Personal computers are to be used strictly for notes and accessing course material.  It is the responsibility of students to advise the instructor before class of special circumstances that may require communication from home.

Grading Criteria

1. Required Assignment for Core Component Areas – Communication, Critical Thinking, Personal and Social Responsibilities (30%) – This is required of all Humanities students and involves essay submission, individual and group presentations.  Please refer to class handouts as well as announcements on the website for instructions and schedules.

 

2.  Four Tests (40%) – Tests are submitted online and are open for two days.  Students must complete them in a single sitting and there is no backtracking.

 

3.  Attendance Essay (10%) – Students are required to attend a professional artistic performance, or an exhibition of visual art, and respond with an analytic essay of no less than 500 words.

 

4.  Final (20%) – Final is all – inclusive (Tests 1 – 4), is open for three days, and students have unlimited submissions with the highest grade counting.

A: 89.5 – 100

B: 79.5 – 89.49

C: 69.5 – 79.49

D: 59.5 – 69.49

F: 59.49 and below

 

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students with frequent absences, as well as those who leave prior to dismissal, not only risk refusal of any extra credit, but inevitably realize lower academic performance because of missed material.
