Student Performance

The ACcess Learning Center's BASR 0302 class is designed to help students build intermediate skills in reading. Students will follow individualized lesson plans developed for their particular skill area based on weaknesses identified from their pre-test results.  Students will work with instructors to build skills as well as practice building skills on the computer or using other supplemental materials. The flexibility of the program allows students to work in the Center around their weekly personal schedules. In other words, you must attend class at least 5 ½ hours each week, but you can choose when during the week you want to attend. An initial orientation is mandatory prior to beginning a course of study. Assessments will be given during the first week of enrollment to determine a student’s skill level for placement in the program.

Grading Criteria

You will earn a grade based on the following criteria:

Final Grade Requirements

40% of your final grade will be the average of the Weaver Wise Online Reading Program's post-test grades.

30% of your final grade will be your final exam grade.  (You MUST take your TABE posttest before you can take your final.)

20% of your final grade will be the average of your weekly attendance grades.**

10% of your final grade will be based on the improvement you demonstrate from your pre-TABE test to your post-TABE test.  (In some cases another standardized test may be used in lieu of the TABE test.)

**Weekly attendance is required. You must spend a minimum of 5 ½ (5:30) hours each week attending class in the Learning Center and working with instructors.

Weekly hours must be completed by 11:59 pm each Sunday evening.

You will earn your weekly attendance grade of 100% for completing the entire 5 ½ (5:30) hours of time for the week, OR you will earn a weekly attendance grade of 0% for any time less than 5 ½ (5:30) hours.  However, once you have met the cumulative total hours, the zero will be replaced with a grade of 65. You always have the option of attending class more than 5 ½ (5:30) hours each week and completing the course early.  If you stop attending class, you will receive an “F” in the course unless you drop the class by the July 30th withdrawal date.  It is your responsibility to drop the class, but if you are on Financial Aid, you need to visit with a Financial Aid counselor before dropping ANY college course.

You will be practicing reading by working in the Weaver Wise Online Reading program.  The learning center instructors will enroll you after you complete your pre-test and then show you how to get started working in the program. To access the Weaver program, log on to:  http://www.wisesoftonline.com/readingonline/

Until you score at college level on the TSI, or successfully complete the BASR classes, you will be unable to enroll in most of your courses for your major.  So take this class seriously because your future in college depends on your taking it seriously and working hard.  The harder you work this semester, the faster you’ll make progress, and the faster you’ll get into those major courses that count toward your degree or certificate.
