    Course Description:  Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college and student.

    End-of-Course Outcomes:  As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

    Students will be evaluated on professional qualities:  conduct and behavior, patient/sonographer interaction, patient and sonographer safety, employee functions.  Student is expected to follow dress code of clinical site, ie, hair, fingernails, tattoo visibility, etc.

    COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

    A. GOALS

    Given the appropriate textbooks, personal notes, handouts, and other course materials, the student

    should complete each of the following goals as evaluated by the faculty in the program.

    1. Apply the knowledge learned in the on-campus didactic courses to the specific

    clinical assignment rotations.

    2. Using critical thinking skills, make those decisions necessary to complete all

    clinical procedures appropriate to this course level.

    3. Evaluate the learning experience from the perspective of the course competencies.

    . OBJECTIVES

    The student who satisfactorily completes this clinical course will develop the following competencies as evaluated by the college faculty — including clinical adjunct faculty — using a written evaluation instrument with a minimum passing score of 75 percent:

    These same objectives will be used throughout the program with each subsequent practicum course. Students will be evaluated based on their knowledge at this point in the program with the assumption that all skills will continue to be developed as you proceed through the program.

    1. Exercise the priorities required in daily clinical practice,

    2. Execute medical imaging procedures under the appropriate level of supervision,

    3. Adhere to team practice concepts that focus on organizational theories, role of team members and conflict resolution,

    4. Adapt to changes and varying clinical situations,

    5. Describe the role of health care team members in responding/reacting to local or national emergencies,

    6. Provide patient-centered clinically effective care for all patients regardless of age, gender, disability, special needs, ethnicity, or culture,

    7. Integrate the use of appropriate and effective written, oral and nonverbal communication with patients, the public, and members of the health care team in the clinical setting,

    8. Integrate appropriate personal and professional values into clinical practice,

    9. Recognize the influence of professional values on patient care,

    10. Explain how a person’s cultural beliefs toward illness and health affects his or her own health status,

    11. Use patient and family education strategies appropriate to the comprehension level of the patient/family,

    12. Provide desired psychosocial support to the patient and family,

    13. Demonstrate competent assessment skills through effective management of the patient’s physical and mental status,

    14. Respond appropriately to medical emergencies,

    15. Examine demographic factors that influence patient compliance with medical care,

    16. Adapt procedures to meet age-specific, disease-specific and cultural needs of patients,

    17. Assess the patient and record clinical history,

    18. Demonstrate basic life support procedures,

    19. Use appropriate charting methods,

    20. Recognize life threatening ECG tracing,

    21. Apply standard and transmission-based precautions,

    22. Apply appropriate medical asepsis and sterile technique,

    23. Demonstrate competency in the principles of  protection standards,

    24. Report equipment malfunctions,

    25. Examine procedure orders for accuracy and make corrective actions when applicable,

    26. Demonstrate safe, ethical and legal practices,

    27. Integrate the sonographer’s practice standards into clinical practice setting,

    28. Maintain patient confidentiality standards and meet HIPAA requirements,

    29. Demonstrate the principles of transferring, positioning, and immobilizing patients,

    30. Comply with the departmental and institutional response to emergencies, disasters, and accidents,

    31. Differentiate between emergency and non – emergency procedures,

    32, Adhere to national, institutional and departmental standards, policies, and procedures regarding care of patients, providing sonographic procedures and reducing medical errors.

    33. Select technical factors to produce quality diagnostic images with the lowest  exposure possible, especially fetal exposure,

    34. Critique images for appropriate anatomy, image quality, and patient identification,

    35. Determine corrective measures to improve inadequate images,

    36. Apply the principles of total quality management.

    If a student has a concern with the course instructor, the following due process protocol will apply. The student will follow the protocol steps in the order shown.

       1. Make every effort to resolve the concern directly with the course instructor. The instructor should be contacted by the student before the conclusion of the course.

       2. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the course instructor, the student should seek satisfaction from the director of sonography within one week of the student instructor meeting.

       3. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the director of sonography, the student should seek satisfaction from the Dean of Health Sciences within one week of the student supervisor meeting.

      4. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the Dean of Health Sciences, the student should seek satisfaction from the Vice-President of Academic Affairs within one week of the student - Dean meeting.

      5. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the Vice-President of Academic Affairs, the student should seek satisfaction from the College President within one week of the student-Vice-President meeting.

       6. If the concern cannot be resolved to the satisfaction of the student after meeting with the President, the student should seek satisfaction from the college Board of Regents at the next regular meeting of the Regents. The decision of the Regents will be final.

     

    Electronic Devices

    Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are distractions in the learning environment and may cause performance errors.

    Students may not carry cell phones or other personal electronic devices during clinical hours.  These devices must be turned off during assigned clinical hours and placed out of sight.  Students may not carry electronic devices on their person at any time during the clinical day.

    To further elaborate, since the student may not have an electronic device on their person, texting is not allowed during assigned clinical hours.

    Personal phone calls are discouraged, but in the event that you must receive an emergency phone call, the affiliate departmental numbers are located on the clinical schedules, so please give these numbers to those who may try to reach you during clinical hours.

    Grading Criteria

    FINAL GRADE EVALUATION

    The following grade scale applies throughout this clinical course for all activities:

    A = 92 - 100

    B = 83 - 91

    C = 75 - 82

    F = 74 or below

    A grade of "D" is not possible in this course.

    Clinical site preceptors will evaluate each student using a prescribed Exam Competency form.  The course instructor will provide students with these forms, as needed.

    Student is expected to maintain a log of clinical experiences and complete all documentation demonstrating proficiency for all assigned clinical competencies.

    The instructor reserves the right to add additional evaluations of student work in the lab setting and as needed to support the hands-on experience.

     

     

    Attendance

    ATTENDANCE POLICY

    A student who plans to successfully complete all competency requirements for this clinical course must also plan to attend clinical assignments on a regular and timely basis and complete all activities with a final score of not less than 75 percent. Excessive absences and/or tardy arrivals may jeopardize the potential for learning in this course.

    The student must refer to the Clinical Handbook to determine point deductions for absences and tardiness at clinical duty sites.

    Calendar

    This practicum is divided into five week rotations.

    The course instructor will provide a schedule to each student in advance so that students can prepare for each clinical experience.  The schedule will specify the times and days of the clinical experiences, as well as the medical site the student will be attening.

    NOTE:  DUE TO THE AVAILABILITY OF CLINICAL SITES, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF THE AMARILLO REGION FROM TIME-TO-TIME. 

    THE SONOGRAPHY PROGRAM MAINTAINS AFFILIATION AGREEMENTS WITH VARIOUS SITES WITHIN AMARILLO, AS WELL AS HOSPITALS IN CHILDRESS, DUMAS, AND GUYMON.

    STUDENTS TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF THE AMARILLO AREA WILL KNOW ABOUT THESE CLINICAL ROTATIONS IN ADVANCE SO THAT THEY CAN PREPARE PROPERLY.

    THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR WILL PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AS NEEDED.
