Expected Student Behavior

\
    \
  1. Please make every effort to be on time.  Late arrivals are very disrupting to the class and to a proper leaning environment.
  2. \
  3. If you must leave class for any reason, you may not return until the class period is over.
  4. \
  5. The student should read assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss topics covered in class.  Students will be called on to share their understanding of topics.
  6. \
  7. Assigned homework is to be completed before class.  Homework cannot be completed in class unless the instructor gives permission.
  8. \
  9. Exams and daily quizzes will be handed out at the beginning of class.  In the case of major exams, students may begin the exam when they arrive, but  will have the same turn-in deadline as everyone else in the class.  In the case of daily quizzes, if the student arrives late, he/she will not be allowed to take the quiz and will receive a grade of 0.  Please note that for major exams the student will need to bring their own Scantron sheets and pencils.
  10. \
  11. CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF OR BE IN VIBRATE ONLY MODE DURING CLASS AND EXAMS.  If a cell phone rings during a major exam, a 10% score deduction will be implemented when the exam is graded.  Cell phone calculators may not be used during exams.  The type of calculator needed for this class can be purchased very inexpensively.  MP3 players are not allowed in class or lab.
  12. \
  13. Other disruptive behavior, such as carrying on private conversations may lead to the student being asked to leave the classroom.  If his happens, the student will not be allowed to return until after a counseling session with the Program Director.
  14. \
  15. Cheating on exams or copying the work of others on assignments will result in a grade of 0 for the exam or assignment and will severely jeopardize successful completion of this course (see AC RC Student Handbook).
  16. \
\

Grading Criteria

A minimum grade of "C" must be earned by each student to successfully complete the goals of this course.

Required Work

  1. 1 oral case study (scheduled during Friday Physician Presentation)
  2. Announced and unannounced quizzes
  3. Class Participation
  4. Two major exams

Grading

Categories of class work will be weighted in the determination of the final course grade:

Exams & Quizzes - 50%
Class Participation - 25%
Oral Case Study - 25%

The grading scale for this course is:

A  =  90 - 100
B  =  80 - 89
C  =  70 - 89
F  =  score less than 70

Description of Grading Components

Rounding of score will take place as follows:  0.5 will round up to the next highest whole number, ex. 69.5 = 70.0.  69.4 will NOT round up.

Make-up policy

The opportunity to make-up missed tests and turn in assignments will be decided on an individual basis by the instructor.  The exam must be taken within 1 week and the maximum grade that can be earned is 70%.  Makeup exams may be different from the exam given on the scheduled day.  There will be no make-up offered for the final exam, lab practical or quizzes.

If a student is absent for a case study presentation, an attempt will be made to reschedule. However, scheduling is “tight” and a make-up may not be possible.  The highest grade a student can earn on a makeup presentation is 70%.

Testing Procedure

During the testing period, the student may take a break, however, no additional time will be allowed for the test.  Only one student at a time may leave the testing room.  After completion of a major exam, the student will not be allowed to wait for the next class in the laboratory or hallway.  The student must either sit quietly in their seat until all students are finished or exit the building.

Remediation Policy

The instructor will meet with students who perform poorly on quizzes and assignments.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered.  The plan may include but not be limited to:

  1. re-taking the quiz/exam
  2. research of topics
  3. written discussion of topics

Remediation of an exam will not change the original test grade and must be complete before the next exam can be taken.

Attendance

\ A student who plans to pass this course should also plan to regularly attend all class sessions. Students chronically late for class or those with excessive absences may be at risk for passing this course. Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be addressed on an individual basis with the instructor.
