In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

  1. Please make every effort to be on time.  Late arrivals are very disrupting to the class and to a proper leaning environment.
  2. If you must leave class for any reason, you may not return until the class period is over.
  3. The student should read assignments prior to class and be prepared to discuss topics covered in class.  Students will be called on to share their understanding of topics.
  4. Assigned homework is to be completed before class.  Homework cannot be completed in class unless the instructor gives permission.
  5. Exams and daily quizzes will be handed out at the beginning of class.  In the case of major exams, students may begin the exam when they arrive, but  will have the same turn-in deadline as everyone else in the class.  In the case of daily quizzes, if the student arrives late, he/she will not be allowed to take the quiz and will receive a grade of 0.  Please note that for major exams the student will need to bring their own Scantron sheets and pencils.
  6. CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF OR BE IN VIBRATE ONLY MODE DURING CLASS AND EXAMS.  If a cell phone rings during a major exam, a 10% score deduction will be implemented when the exam is graded.  Cell phone calculators may not be used during exams.  The type of calculator needed for this class can be purchased very inexpensively.  MP3 players are not allowed in class or lab.
  7. Other disruptive behavior, such as carrying on private conversations may lead to the student being asked to leave the classroom.  If his happens, the student will not be allowed to return until after a counseling session with the Program Director.
  8. Cheating on exams or copying the work of others on assignments will result in a grade of 0 for the exam or assignment and will severely jeopardize successful completion of this course (see AC RC Student Handbook).

Grading Criteria

Required Work

  1. 4 major exams
  2. Writing assignment (Due:  Oct. 13 and Nov. 17)
  3. Announced and unannounced quizzes

Categories of class work will be weighted in the determination of the final course grade:

Exams & Quizzes - 70%
Writing Assignment - 30%

The grading scale for this course is:

A  =  90 - 100
B  =  80 - 89
C  =  70 - 79
F  =  score less than 70

Description of Grading Components

  1. If a student is absent for a regularly scheduled examination, the student can take a makeup examination within 1 week but the highest grade a student can earn is 70%.  An examination may not be taken before the scheduled date.  All material given in this course will be tested during the major examinations.
  2. Two writing assignments will be given during the semester.  Each writing assignments will be 500 words in length, typed, and cover some facet of respiratory care patient assessment.  The assignments are due on specified dates and after the dates, the assignment will be “late” and subject to the 70% maximum rule.  Assignments will NOT be accepted later than 7 days from the due date. Failure to submit a paper will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment.
  3. At least 10% of the questions on major exams will come from the reading assignments.
  4. On major exams, the highest point total achieved will be curved to an A and that number of points added to all students results. However, the maximum number of added points will not exceed 10% of the exam point total, providing the possibility that an A will not be achieved.
  5. Rounding of score will take place as follows:  0.5 will round up to the next highest whole number, ex. 69.5 = 70.0.  69.4 will NOT round up.

Testing Procedure

During the testing period, the student may take a break, however, no additional time will be allowed for the test.  Only one student at a time may leave the testing room.  After completion of a major exam, the student will not be allowed to wait for the next class in the laboratory or hallway.  The student must either sit quietly in their seat until all students are finished or exit the building.

Calculators may not be used during exams.

The Program has 1 "loaner" computer for testing. If your laptop fails to log in, the loaner will be available on a first-come, first serve basis. If the loaners is not available, the test will have to be taken at a later date, with the late penalty applied.

Remediation Policy

The instructor will meet with students who do not pass exams for mandatory remediation.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the test.  The plan may include, but not be limited to:

  • research of exam topics
  • written discussion of topics
  • discussion of topics

Mandatory remediation of an exam will be a group event at a date/time set by the instructor. Failure to arrive on time and complete the a remediation meeting at the set date/time will result in negative points (-10 points) for that meeting, included in the exam/quiz portion of total course points.

Attendance

\ A student who plans to pass this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture sessions.  Students chronically late for class or those with excessive absences may be at risk for passing this course.  Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be addressed on an individual basis with the instructor.
