Course Description: Skill development in the photographic principles of portrait lighting, posing, and subject rapport.
End-of-Course Outcomes: Use a variety of basic lighting patterns; explain the principles of subject rapport and aesthetic posing methods; produce effective finished portraits; and utilize subject analysis.

\ This is a professional subject and I expect all to act with professionalism. At certain times I may ask you to also dress professionally in order to assist your classmates in their photography or do off-campus photography. All cell phones should be set to silent or turned off during lecture and lab.

Grading Criteria

Grading Criteria/Grade Scale:

Course is graded on a 100-pt scale broken down as follows:

Participation                                     10%

Weekly Assignments                        70%

Final Portfolio                                    20%

Grading Schema:

89.5% and 100% = A

79.5% and  Less Than 89.5% = B

69.5% and  Less Than 79.5% = C

59.5% and  Less Than 69.5% = D

0% and  Less Than 59.5% = F

Final:

The final portfolio and presentation will be considered the capstone project for the course. The portfolio should contain 8 of your best images in a portfolio case, 5 of which can come from submitted assignments.

Attendance

\ Attendance is crucial as neither lectures nor labs can be made up outside of class (extreme, legitimate extenuating circumstances may be considered). It will be noted if you arrive late, leave early, or disappear for long periods during class time. This will lower your participation grade. If you are absent, you can’t participate. Thus absences will affect your grade considerably. However, if you are very ill, stay home and get better.

\ • If you have to be out of town for a special event, talk to me in advance to make the appropriate arrangements. The more you give me a heads up and discuss with me, the more supportive I can be.

\

\ • Penalties for all Absences:

\

\ You have 1 without penalty. Please remember since the class only meets one day a week you will miss a considerable amount of material.

\

\ All other unexcused absences will lower your final grade 5% for each absence.

\

\ • It is YOUR responsibility to obtain the information missed if you are absent. I will not repeat lectures or demos. You must get notes from classmates, read the given material, do research to learn the material you missed.

\

\ Tardiness:

\

\ Habitual lateness is not acceptable. Be on time and have assignments ready BEFORE class begins. Latecomers are disruptive to the class process. I will note attendance in the first 5 minutes of class. If you are not present, you will be considered absent for that day. If you are late, I will keep track of this and it will affect your grade. 3 lates = 1 unexcused absence

\ Additional lab time:

\ This course will require more time than allotted to complete class assignments. Open studio times will be available for those who are unable to complete assignments in normal lab hours. Consider this homework time, a requirement for the class. Not having enough time to complete assignments is not a valid excuse!
