Prerequisite: POFI 2340 -minimum grade of C or demonstrated competence

Course Description

In-depth coverage of desktop publishing terminology, text editing and use of design principles. Emphasis on layout techniques, graphics, multiple page displays and business applications. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

    \ The student will define desktop publishing terminology; manipulate text and graphics to create a balanced and focused layout; and create fliers, brochures, and multiple page documents according to specified procedures.

    Grading Criteria

    GRADING SCALE:   Course grade:  90-100 = A; 80-89 = B;            70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; <60 = F

     10% - Portfolio
     20% - Chapter Exercises
    70% - Unit Performance Assessments & Chapter Assessments
    100% - Semester Grade

    ASSESSMENTS GRADING SCALE:

    100 = 0 errors
      85 = 1 error
      75 = 2 errors
      65 = 3 errors
      55 = 4 errors
      50 = 5+ errors

    PORTFOLIO:   Submit at least 20 exercises and/or assessments (of your choosing) in a labeled/organized portfolio.  You choose whether to create a “hard copy” portfolio (in color) or whether to save your portfolio to a CD.  The samples included in your portfolio MUST be perfect and ready for submission to prospective employers.  Hard-copy portfolios must be organized/labeled in a binder or folder.

      10 percent - Portfolio
      20 percent - Word 2013 Chapter Exercises
      70 percent - Unit Performance Assessments & Chapter Assessments
    100 percent - Semester Grade                                                                               

    Word 2013 Chapter Exercises will be checked:  (total 41 exercises)
                41-40 completed exercises = A           
                39-37 completed exercises = B
                36-34 completed exercises = C
                33-31 completed exercises = D
                30-28 completed exercises = F
                Below 28 completed exercises = 0

    (You MUST complete at least 28 chapter exercises.  Regardless of other grades, if you do NOT complete at least 27 chapter exercises, your course grade will be an F.)  Your instructor will check all chapter exercises.  If you successfully complete the assigned exercise, you will receive a “check mark” which equals a “100.”  If your instructor writes “Redo” on the assignment, then you must redo and resubmit the assignment for a grade.

    Word 2013 Chapter Skill Assessments and Unit Performance Assessments will be graded (see grading scale):  (There are 32 chapter skill assessments and unit performance assessments.)

    Weekly lab assignments are due as stated on the course schedule.  You must submit assignments by the posted deadlines.

    You must label your chapter/unit assignments properly in order to receive credit.  Staple all printed material assigned for that chapter/unit assignments together.  Prepare a cover page with your first and last name, your class (DTP, T/R, 9:00-10:15 a.m.), and assignment number.  At the top, right corner of each assignment, you must label each exercise or assessment number.

    Chapter/unit assignments are to be placed in box labeled:  CARGILL, T/R, 9:00-10:15 a.m., which is located in BYRD 212.

    There is no comprehensive final examination.  However, you must submit all assignments plus your portfolio before 11 a.m. on
    December 11, 2014.

    Attendance

    \ Employees in the business world are expected to be at work promptly each day; therefore, students in business classes are expected to be in class promptly each day. This class meets twice per week. After two absences for any reason, 1 point will be deducted from the semester average for two absences. There are no excused absences. Two tardies equal one absence. If you are more than 5 minutes late to a class, it will be counted as a tardy.
