Course Description

Integration of previous knowledge and skills into the continued development of the professional nurse as a provider of patient-centered care, patient safety advocate, member of health care team and member of the profession. Emphasis on clinical decision-making for clients in medical-surgical settings experiencing health problems involving gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine and metabolic disorders, reproductive and sexual disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, eye-ear-nose-throat disorders and integumentary disorders. Discussion of knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Expected Student Behavior

\  BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS AND CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:
\ 1. Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request from the instructor for the offending student to leave the class.

Grading Criteria

GRADING CRITERIA/GRADING SCALE:
The following criteria will be used to determine the course grade:
1. A=90-100, B=80-89.999, C=75-79.999, D=60-74.999, F=below 60. There will be no rounding of grades. For example, a grade of 79.6 is a "C" and will not be rounded to an "80". The minimum passing final course grade is 75%.
2. Three major examinations is 75% of course grade.
3. One EVOLVE medical surgical specialty examination will be administered during the semester. The Evolve Specialty Exam is 5% of the course grade. The conversion score will be the grade recorded for this exam. For example, a conversion score of 79.6% will be recorded as 79.6%. There is no rounding.

4. A remediation plan is sent to students by Evolve after the specialty exam.

5. All students must access the on-line remediation through HESI Assessment after   the course’s Evolve Specialty or Custom Exam. All students will develop an      individualized study packet, and review all areas designated as needing  improvement. Completion of remediation and development of a study packet is due by the Friday before the final exam. If it is not completed as assigned, then the student will fail the course because of a failure to complete this requirement.

6. The time required to spend on remediation will depend on the student's Specialty Exam grade as follows:

1000 or > - 0 required

900 or > - 1 hour

800-899 - 2 hours

700-799 - 3 hours

600-699 - 4 hours

500-599- 5 hours

400-499- 6 hours

300-399- 8 hours

6. The final examinations is 20% of the course grade.  All students are required to take the Final Examination.  This means that no students are exempt from the Final Examination.  The Final course grade on all students will be determined by major exams, Evolve Specialty Exam and the Final Examination.
7. Make-up examinations are to taken within one-week (prior to the next class meeting) if a regularly scheduled examination is missed. Make-up examinations will be administered to students who arrive late to a regularly scheduled examination time or who fail to present their Amarillo College student picture identification. Make-up examinations may be multiple choice, essay, and/or short answer questions.

 

Attendance

\ ATTENDANCE POLICY:
\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students must attend at least 90% of class meetings. This means 90% of the total number of hours that is allotted to this class.

Calendar

 COURSE SCHEDULE/OUTLINE:
1. Classroom instruction for Section 001 is 1030-1220 and Section 002 is 1430-1620 during the fall and spring semesters on  Tuesdays. Classroom times vary during summer sessions. The class calendar will be posted on the RNSG 1248 bulletin board in advance of each semester.
2. The final examination scheduled will be posted at least one month prior to the final examination week. Students who have a general education course examination which conflicts with a nursing examination may re-schedule their nursing examination on an individual basis with the consent of the appropriate nursing faculty member and testing laboratory assistant. The final examination for this course will be taken in the 15th week of the semester. All students will take the final exam regardless of grade prior to the exam. The date and time for the final examination TBA.
