  • 9x12 (20 sheet) pad of Bristol Board (I prefer the “vellum” surface)

  • Sketchbook - anything around 8.5x11 (Moleskine is prefered, great product)

    Student Performance

    An introduction to the fundamental terminology, concepts, theory, and application of two-dimensional design.

    Learning Outcomes  (ACGM)

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

    1. Identify and apply the elements of art and principles of two-dimensional design.

    2. Employ discipline specific vocabulary in the evaluation of two-dimensional design problems.

    3. Demonstrate creative skill in aesthetic problem solving within assigned parameters.

    4. Demonstrate an appropriate level of professional practice, including safety, craft and presentation.

     



    Specific Course Outcomes: 

    1. Students will demonstrate effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. 

    2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of the Visual Arts and Social Responsibility. 

    3. Students will communicate ideas verbally and visually by using design vocabulary. 

    4. Students will express original ideas creatively through design elements and principles. 

    5. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of design skills and principles. 

    6. Students will present work for grading in a professional manner, as directed by the instructor. 

    7. Students will participate meaningfully in critique.

    8. Students will maintain a professional and respectful attitude.

    9. Students will maintain classroom facilities and shared supplies.

    Expected Student Behavior

    - Cell phones will be required to be kept inside your purse, bag or pocket.
    \ - No texting during lecture, critique or class room instruction.
    \ - No social networking of any kind during class time.
    \ - Students are required to come to class prepared with all supplies.
    \ - Student are expected to be respectful to each other and all faculty.

    \ Failure to operate within the above guidelines will result in dismissal from the class and student will not receive credit for that day's attendance. Further action will be taken if a student exhibits a habitual disregard to the above guidelines.

    Anything that the instruction deams as disruptive to your activity in the classroom will be addressed and may result in dismissal form class and student will not receive credit for that day's attendance.

    Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will not be tolerated and will be reported.

    Grading Criteria

    Projects: 60%
    Attendance: 20%
    Quizzes: 20%

    • All projects are due when class starts on the day they are specified to be submitted.
    • LATE PROJECTS and EXERCISES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Instructor will evaluate circumstances with each student to determine the consequences of LATE work submissions.
    • The instructor reserves the right to decline the acceptance of any and all late work resulting in an "F" (zero) for that project grade.
    • Students must contact instructor before projects are due for any pre-approved consideration for late submissions. Vacations will not be considered.
    • The instructor reserves the right to decline the acceptance of any class work and projects that are significantly incomplete, overwhelming disregard instructions or exhibit extreme poor quality.
    • Students are responsible for staying informed of their grades and status in the class.
     
    Projects will be graded on the following criteria. This criteria will be discussed during class, before the first project is graded:
     
    Sketchbook - 10%
    Craftsmanship - 10%
    Project Specification - 20%
    Demonstration of Concepts - 60%
     

    Attendance

    \ THIS IS A STUDIO COURSE - YOUR ATTENDANCE AND PROMPT ARRIVAL TO CLASS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR LEARNING AND EVALUATION.

    \ 4 absences = no penalty
    \ 5 absences = 1/3 for final attendance grade
    \ 6 absences = FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE COURSE

    \ TARDINESS
    \ 3 tardies = no penalty
    \ 4 or more tardies = 1 point removed from CLASSROOM ACTIVITY grade per tardy after 4.

    \ • Students will be responsible for signing their own name on the attendance sheet in class.
    \ • Instructor is not responsible for student's failure to sign in class attendance sheet.
    \ • Failure by student to sign the attendance sheet will result in an absence.
    \ • Students my request a review of their own attendance record with the instructor outside of class time.
