Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills Corequisite: GEOL 1103

Course Description

Introduction to the study of the materials and processes that have modified and shaped the surface and interior of Earth over time. These processes are described by theories based on experimental data and geologic data gathered from field observations.

Student Performance

\ Purpose and Goals of the Course:By the end of the semester the student should be able to complete the listed objectives with a minimum of 60% competency level based on the grading procedure for the course.

\

\ 1.              Be able to explain the geologic processes that are included in the course material (note, not all geologic processes are included in the course).

\

\ 2.              Be able to explain how the science of geology is related to math, electronics, and computer science and the sciences of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and oceanography.

\

\ 3.              Be able to explain the function of geologists in our society.

\

\ In addition to the above stated objectives, this course has as its goal to:

\

\ 1.              Provide students who are going to major in geology or an earth science based subject, the fundamental facts and principles of physical geology they will need to start their upper level courses.

\

\ 2.              Provide students who are not majoring in geology or an earth science based subject, the facts and principles of physical geology they will need to function as an informed and knowledgeable citizen.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Cell phones are not to be out during class unless okayed by the instructor. Any use of a cell phone or other device during a test or quiz will result in immediate forfeiture of the quiz/exam and a zero grade.

\

\ Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period, you must be on time for the quiz. If you are not present when the quiz is handed out, you will not be allowed to take the quiz and will receive a zero for that quiz.

\

\ During exams, you are expected to be on time. Once the first test has been turned in, no tests will be handed out to anyone late for class.

Grading Criteria

 

Grade Determination:

4 Semester Test (Drop Lowest Score)                        60 %
Homework and Quizzes                                                 5 %
Presentation                                                                  5%

Final                                                                            30%

The overall course grade will be according to the following percentages:

A   - 90 - 100 %
B   - 80 - 89.99 %
C   - 70 - 79.99 %
D   - 60 - 69.99 %
F    - Below 60 %

The lowest semester test and the two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. 

There will be no extra credit assignments. If you have a question about a grade, you have two weeks from the date that the grade is posted to ask for a review. After that two weeks the grade will be permanent.

 

Attendance

Attendance Policy: Class attendance is mandatory with attendance monitored by class roll and pop quizzes.
