Prerequisites

Course Description

Introduction to the basic elements of music theory for non-music majors: scales, intervals, keys, triads, elementary ear training, keyboard harmony, notation, meter, and rhythm. (Does not apply to a music major degree.)

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

\ After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

1. \ Identify notes in the Grand Staff
\
2. \ Notate rhythmic dictation
\
3. \ Sight sing simple melodies using the moveable "do" system of solfeggio
\
4. \ Aural identification of intervals
\
5. \ Basic understanding of triads and the I, IV, V7 chords

6. \ Basic understanding of keys

Grading Criteria

\ Based on performance of examinations, homework assignments, lab hours, and class participation (attendance). The exams will count towards one half of the final grade, with homework assignments and lab hours, counting toward the second half. Class attendance will affect the grade as a result of unexcused absence. Successive unexcused absences will result in the reduction of one half letter grade for each absence. It is the absent student's responsibility to find out the homework assignments. These assignments will be expected to be completed. Tests will be required to make up if missed.

\ Required Examinations: Minor examinations and MIDTERM EXAMINATION. Exams will consist of both aural and written format.

\ Final Examinations: a final written and aural exam will be issued during the scheduled time.

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.
