Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Audition or instructor consent

Course Description

One 60-minute lesson per week, minimum 10 hours of outside practice per week required. For music majors, in their major area of performance. Emphasis on development of technique, musicianship and extensive repertoire from contrasting historical periods.

Department Expectations

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Student Performance

\ The student will show a continuous, steady improvement in the mastery of technical and musical skills.  Various technical problems will be addressed according to the individual needs of the student.  Repertoire from the major periods of music will be studied.  At the end of the semester, the student will perform a music jury for the entire music faculty as a final examination, which will include several repertoire pieces as well as scales and other technical exercises.

Expected Student Behavior

Minimum of 2 hours outside practice per day, or 12-15 hours per week.

Grading Criteria

The lesson grade is based on weekly attendance and weekly improvement on assigned materials, which will comprise 50% of the grade. The other 50% will be based on the music jury grade (see final exams).At the discretion of the instructor

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.

Calendar

Additional Information

\ Students should bring thier own guitar to every class meeting.  After the first two lessons the student is expected to bring thier instrument tuned and ready to play.  The student should make sure thier guitar is in working order and is playable.
