Student Performance

  • Learn the elements of a database
  • Learn the purpose of a DBMS
  • Understand the functions of a database application
  • Learn the conceptual foundation of the relational model
  • Learn basic relational terminology
  • Learn the meaning and importance of different types of keys
  • Be able to model data using the Entity-Relational Model
  • Transform the Entity Relational data model into relational designs
  • Apply the normalization process
  • Know how to represent weak entities
  • Represent 1:1, 1:N and N:M binary relationships
  • Represent 1:1, 1:N and N:M recursive relationships
  • Learn SQL for creating database structures, adding data to a database, modifying and deleting data from a database, modifying and deleting tables and constraints
  • Learn SQL SELECT statements and options for processing single and multiple table queries and subqueries, and joins
  • Know basic administrative and mangerial DBA functions
  • Understand the need for database administration including concurrency control, security, backup, recovery (reprocessing, rollback/rollforward)
  • Understand locking, deadlock, optimistic, pessimistic locking
  • Know the meaning of ACID transaction
  • Learn the four 1992 ANSI standard isolation levels
  • Know how to improve database security

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work.  Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.  The faculty of the CIS Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question.

\ Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College , including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of “F” in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Final grades will be assigned as indicated below:

A - Superior, Minimum of 90% average on exams and quizzes plus all homework turned in with a 90% average on that graded.

B - Good, Between 80% and 89.49% average on exams and quizzes plus all homework turned in with a minimum average of 80% on that graded.

C - Adequate, Between 70% and 79.49% average on all work.

D - Minimum, Between 60% and 69.49% average on all work.

F - Failing, Below 60% average on all work.

Student grade will be based on the following:

Attendance

 
  • Check your email daily and have assignments in on time.
  • Attendance for on campus classes and dual credit classes will be taken during each class period.  Attendance for online classes will be determined by participation through homework assignments, discussions, exams and logging on to AC Online.
