Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills; SCIT 1307 recommended

Course Description

A detailed study of the human organism according to levels of chemical and structural organization with special reference to cytology, histology, and organs of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and fluid and electrolyte balance.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to have prepared for lecture and lab by reading the course texts.

Communication of most grades and class information will be through ACConnect on our class homepage and through your AC email account. You must access these accounts regularly to stay current with class and college information.

You must keep your returned papers in the case of any disputed records.

Cell phones are allowed in the silent or vibrate mode during regular lecture/lab.  If you must take an emergency call, please leave quietly.  No earphone use in class. If you abuse this privilege the instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave class or the instructor may read your message/screen to the class.

Cell phones must be OFF and OUT OF SIGHT during exams, practicals and quizzes.  If phone use is observed a grade of ZERO will be given for the exam.

Food and drink is allowed except during dissection labs.  You must clean up after yourself or risk losing a quiz grade.

Please avoid any appearance of cheating.  Cheating will result in a grade of zero for the exam or quiz.  No one will be allowed to begin an exam after anyone leaves the room. 

If you must leave the classroom, please do so quietly.  If students leaving become disruptive, the instructor will not allow returns to class.

Grading Criteria

A = 100 - 89.5%, B = 89 - 79.5%, C = 79 - 69.5%, D = 69 - 59.5%, F = 59% or less.

Please do not contact the instructor if you are going to miss class, unless it will be a prolongued absence.  Don't worry.

No makeups without written excuse such as doctor's note, etc.  No makeups for major exams, the drop grade is for this purpose.

If you receive a grade of 70% or less on any major exam you must have 30 minutes of free tutoring from the Science Enrichment Center before you are allowed to sit for the next exam.  I must receive notice from the lab that you have completed the tutoring. The Instructor tutor option is one time only, by appointment and at my discretion. Drop grades and/or skipping an exam are not exceptions to the tutoring requirement. Tutoring is not negotiable. See the Testing Center Policy at the end of the Syllabus for more information.

Contested grades either for the purpose of math errors or disputed questions must be submitted by email with the appropriate supporting evidence or explanation included. This must be done within 2 weeks of receiving the grade.

Attendance

\ Attendance is absolutely necessary to be successful in this course.  Attendance will be taken each class day.

Additional Information

Pre and Post Tests:

All traditional & hybrid courses will require students to take the pre-test in the STC between Aug. 25 and Sep. 5.  The post-test will also be required and will be available in the STC between Nov. 24 and Dec. 5. 

Students must take the pre-test before they may take Lecture exam 1 and must take the post-test before they may take the final.

These tests will not count as a grade but will earn bonus points that will be applied to Lecture exam 1 and 5, respectively.

2 points for taking the test and scoring below a 70%

3 points for scoring between 70% and 79%

4 points for scoring between 80% and 89%

5 points for scoring between 90% and 100%

The testing center staff will provide students with scantrons for these tests and ensure that the student has written the instructor's name and the section number on the scantron. 

Science Testing Center:

Warren Hall 112
All tests, excluding the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center and may be taken during normal Science Testing Center hours, day or evening.  Tests are to be taken outside of class lecture time.     Please note:  No tests will be given out less than one and a half hours before the Science Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test. If you were required to attend tutoring, you must present your signed/stamped form.
When using the Science Testing Center students must scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I.D.

Mandatory Tutoring:

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the 5 exam and the final) must complete a mandatory 30 minute tutoring session with his/her instructor or in the Science Enrichment before taking the next exam.
Appointments for 30 minute tutoring are required and can be scheduled in the Science Enrichment Center or by calling (806)371-5536.
A Record of Tutoring form will be given to you when you complete 30 minutes of required tutoring. You will not be allowed to take the next exam without the complete Record of Tutoring form.

Cheating:
Cheating will not be tolerated in any biology course at Amarillo College. On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract. Included in the contract is the following statement: "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course. This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test."
You will not be allowed to take your tests until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center.
*Please Note: NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course!
