Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Existing keyboarding skill of 25 wpm

Course Description

Review, correct and improve keyboarding techniques for the purpose of increasing speed and improving accuracy. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

Improving Speed & Accuracy in Keyboarding + Access Card Package, McGraw-Hill Irwin Publishing, ISBN 9780077804749.  The textbook for this course is required.

   Student Performance

   The student will demonstrate significant increase in keyboarding speed and accuracy at 40 words per minute (wpm) with minimum proficiency.

   The student will be able to complete satisfactorily all of the listed Performance Learning Objectives with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructors grading scale.

   1. Key by touch, using appropriate technique.

   2. Key selected practice lessons to correct and achieve gains in speed and accuracy.

   3. Increase speed from course entry rate (words per minute increase as designated by instructor).

   END-OF-COURSE OUTCOMES:  Demonstrate increased keyboarding speed and accuracy.

   Expected Student Behavior

   \ PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, AND INDIVIDUAL WORK ETHIC:  The Amarillo College policies and Code of Student Conduct is strictly adhered to when dealing with plagiarism, cheating, and duplication of work product.  Any evidence of plagiarism, cheating, or duplication of work product will result in a zero on the project or test in question.

   Grading Criteria

   Your best two timed writings will be recorded weekly.  You can view your current grade through the gradebook.

   Your final course grade is based upon your improvement.

   To determine final course grade, after establishing control/speed rate, produce at least two 5-minute timed writings meeting your speed and accuracy goal. 
   
   A = Improvement of 8 words per minute with 0-5 errors
   B = Improvement of 4 words per minute with 0-5 errors
   C = No increase; minimum 25 words per minute with 0-5 errors

   Attendance

   DEPARTMENTAL ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Employees in the business world are expected to be at work promptly each day; therefore, students in business classes are expected to be in class promptly each day.

   CLASS PROCEDURE:

   1. You will work on drills for control and/or for speed every class meeting.
   \
   2. You will take 5-minute timed writings every class.  At the end of the second or third week of class, and after you have several five-minute timings with 0-5 errors, you will meet with your instructor to set your entry (beginning) control speed.

   3. Your grade is based on improvement throughout the course.
