Student Performance

The ACcess Learning Center's BASM 0301 class is a competency based class designed to help you build basic skills in reading. You will follow individualized lesson plans developed for your particular skill area based on weaknesses identified from your pre-test results.  You will work with instructors to build skills as well as practice building skills on the computer or using other supplemental materials. The flexibility of the program allows you to work in the Center around your weekly personal schedule. You must attend class at least three (3) hours weekly for a total of 45 hours, but you can choose when during the week you want to attend and for how long each visit will be. You must attend an initial orientation prior to beginning your course of study. You will be given assessments during the first week of enrollment to determine your skill level for placement in the program.

Expected Student Behavior

STUDENTS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Students are expected to be supportive of the learning environment within the ACcess Learning Center. Behaviors that are not supportive include but are not limited to:

• Cheating or Academic Dishonesty as outlined in “Students Rights and Responsibilities”
\
• Abusing  equipment   
\
• Using personal electronic devices
\
• Using Language that is abusive, offensive or disrespectful
\

Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to:

• Removal from the Learning Center,  
\
• Consultation with the Learning Center Coordinator and/or other AC authority
\
• Withdrawal from the course and/or the college.
\

LEARNING CENTER RULES

\
• Tobacco, food or drink in any form is not allowed in the Learning Center
\
• Learning Center computers are for academic use only – no YouTube or other videos (other than those assigned); no music
\
• Cell phones cannot be used - – that means no calls, no texting, no using the calculator while in class.  If you must answer a call or text, log out and take the call or answer the text in the lounge area adjacent to the learning center.
\
• The use of calculators is not allowed including the calculator on your cell phone
\
• Children are not allowed in the learning center at any time
\
• Students must be enrolled in an ACcess Learning Center course to be in the Learning Center or to use Learning Center computers.
\

Grading Criteria

You will earn a grade based on the following criteria:

**Weekly attendance is required. You must spend a minimum of three (3:00) hours each week attending class in the Learning Center and working with instructors.

Weekly hours must be completed by 11:59 pm each Sunday evening.

You will earn your weekly attendance grade of 100% for completing the entire three (3:00) hours of time for the week, OR you will earn a weekly attendance grade of 0% for any time less than three (3:00) hours.  However, once you have met the cumulative total hours requirement, any zero attendance grade will be replaced with a grade of 65%. You have the option of attending class more than three (3:00) hours each week and completing the course early. 

If you stop attending class, you will receive an “F” in the course unless you drop the class by the Nov. 18th withdrawal date.  It is your responsibility to drop the class, but if you are on Financial Aid, you need to visit with a Financial Aid counselor before dropping ANY college course.

Until you score college level on the TSI Reading test or successfully complete the BASM classes, you will be unable to enroll in most of your courses for your major.  So take this class seriously because your future in college depends on your taking it seriously and working hard.  The harder you work this semester, the faster you’ll make progress, and the faster you’ll get into those major courses that count toward your degree or certificate.

To view your current course grades -

• Go to www.actx.edu, click on AC Connect, and then log in.  (If needed, ask an instructor for help.)

• Click on your course.

• Click on My Grades on the menu to the left.  You will only see the attendance portion of your grade until the end of the semester.

To view your Final course grades

• Go to www.actx.edu, click on AC Connect, and then log in.
\
• Scroll down to Self Service on bottom right of the page, and click on Current Student.
\
• Under current student, click on Academic Profile and then Grades.
\

You will earn a letter grade for this course based on the following:

A final grade of 90-100% = A (passing)

A final grade of 80-89% = B (passing)

A final grade of 70-79% = C (passing)

A final grade of 60-69% = D

A final grade of below 60% (Unsatisfactory) = F

Attendance

This is a competency based course.  Once you demonstrate mastery (competency) in this course by passing tests and completing assignments and taking your final, you will have completed the course and can immediately start on the next BASM course if needed.  All coursework, hours, and tests must be completed by 5 pm on Dec. 7, 2014. This is the final day the Learning Center on Washington Street is open for instruction. Dec. 8th & 9th are the last days you’ll be able to take your final exam, and you must take the final in order to receive a passing grade for this course. You may finish this BASM course early by completing coursework and completing your final exam prior to the course deadline.  The last day to drop/withdraw is Nov. 18, 2014.
