Student Performance

Given the course textbook, personal notes, and handouts, the student should:
    1.   Learn technical terminology, facts, theories and principals associated with the basic dental lab procedures as related to chairside assisting.

    2.   Apply knowledge learned in class to concrete or particuar situations in a clinical setting.

    3.   Evaluate the learning experience from the perspective of the specific course objectives.

1.    Discuss safety precautions that should be taken in the dental laboratory

2.    List the types of equipment found in a dental laboratory and describe their uses

3.    Discuss dental models and their uses in patient treatment nad treatment planning

4.    Discuss gypsum products and their role in making of dental models

5.    List the three types of custom impression trays

6.    Identify the types of waxes and their use in dentistry

7.    Discuss provisional coverage.

8.    Discuss the assistant's role in making the provisional crown, including the proper fit and coverage of the prepared tooth

9.    Discuss home care instructions for the provisional coverage

10.   Explain the process of removing the provisional crown and preparing for the delivery of the permanent coverage

11.   Diferentiate between removable partial and full denture

12.    Identify factors that influence the choice for removable partial and full dentures

13.    List the components of a removable partial and full denture

14.   Describe the appointmnet sequence for making a removable partial and a full denture

15.   Discuss the advantages/disadvantages of an immediate full denture

16.   Discuss the process of denture adjustments, repairs and duplication

17.    Discuss the various handpieces used in dental treatment and dental lab procedures

18.   Describe and identify the attachments used for each type of handpiece

19.   Describe rotary instruments and how they are used

PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES

1.   Prepare, take, and remove alginate impressions and bite registrations, following ALL OSHA guidelines

2.   Fabricate temporary crowns to competent level

3.   Fabricate study models to competent level

4.    Fabricate custom trays, whitning, fluoride and mouthguards

5.    Demonstrate the various uses for waxes used in dental

6.    Clean and polish various dental appliances

7.    Correctly attach various burs to the High Speed handpiece depending on the task to be accomplished

8.    Correctly attach various burs to the Slow Speed handpiece depending on the task to be accomplished

9.    Demonstrate how to porperly care for each type of handpiece, including disinfecting and sterilization techniques

Expected Student Behavior

\ The student is being guided to be a dental healthcare team member and as such, will learn the traits a skilled team member must have in order to acheive success. These traits include; punctuality, respect, attitude, character, teamwork, productivity and dress and grooming. The student will be expected to follow all OSHA, CDC, Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and other government agency mandates. We realize the student is not familiar with such structure therefore, the student will first recieve two correctional warnings. THe first will be verbal, the second will be written. On the third infraction of the same type offense, points will be deducted from the students grade. Every attempt possible is made by the staff and faculty of this course to help the student to succeed in the dental profession.

The following grading scale will be used for all Dental Assisting courses:

A = 93 to 100

B = 83 to 92 

C = 75 to 82

F = Below 75

In order to be fair to students who are present and perform the required tasks and because of time restraints, most missed work, especially lab and clinical work can not be made up. Lab and clinical assignments invlove the use of a partner. Without you they can not perform their assignments.

Missed written exams maybe made up on the designated "make-up" days. These dates will be given at the start of the class. In order to be fair to the students who take the exam at the scheduled time, nake-up exams will lose 5% of their original value. Please note that make-up exams are most often one to five essay type questions.

 

Attendance

"Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class". Due to the amount of information contained in this course, the student who plans to succeed should attend all course sessions regulary and promptly. The student will need to come to class on time, fully prepared for that session, with the necessary materials."  There may be times when it is impossible to attend class due to illness or an emergency, but this course covers so much information in class that an absence can get the student behind and thus, miss some vital questions on an exam. In order to be fair, there is no distinction between an excused or unexcused absence. You may have up to 3 (three) absences in this class without affecting your grade. The fourth (4th) absence will reduce the overall grade by 10 points. Missing 5 class periods is equal to missing 1/3rd of the semester and thus, 1/3rd of the vital skills for your chosen profession.
 

Calendar

This course has 4 chapter exams, 6 demonstrative competencies,  and 1 comprehensive final. The student will also be given a grade for professionalism. Professionalism includes attitude, dress code, ability to get along with ohter classmates and other criteria. The student will be given a handout on expected behaviors the first day of class.

The final will be comprehensive from all materials used throught the semester

\  ELECTRONIC AND RECORDING DEVICES

\ In order to create a proper learning environment, free of unneccessary distractions, all electronic devices are prohibited in this course.

\

\ Cell phones maybe checked at designated break times. Any student that is found texting or talking on their phones during ANY part of class, clinical or lab experience will be asked to leave class for that day and receive a grade of zero for that time period.  Students with children or others in their care may give the the Dental Hygiene front clinical office number to the caregivers for EMERGENCY use only. The front office will then relay the message to the student and the student will be allowed to return the caregivers call immediately. The number is :  806-354-6050.   The AC police may also be called during an EMERGENCY.. that number is  806-371-5163
