Fundamentals of lighting design, including lamps, luminaries, lighting techniques and applications for residential and commercial projects.

Student Performance

The student will:

  • Recognize and use accurate lighting terminology and symbols 
  • Determine the appropriate type of lighting/illuminance for various spaces, tasks, age groups, and the impediments to task visibility
  • Evaluate the structure and function of luminaries types
  • Describe various lighting techniques and specifications
  • Assess appropriate lighting applications and illuminance levels for residential and commercial spaces
  • Identify and analyze energy codes and their impact on lighting design as well as sustainable lighting methodology.
  • Describe the physics of light and the physiology of the eye
  • Explain in plain language how we see
  • Distinguish between perceived and measured illumination
  • Recognize, explain, and integrate daylight and electric lighting.
  • Design, apply and document appropriate lighting solutions.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to practice appropriate classroom etiquette.  Excessive talking and rudeness will not be tolerated.  Cell phones, pagers, etc. will be turned off during class.  Refer to AC's Students' Rights and Responsibilities code of behavior published on the AC Website or in the AC Catalog.

Grading Criteria

Exams 45%, Assignments 30%, Final Project 25% = 100%

Any work missed must be completed within one week of original deadline or by special arrangements with instructor. Otherwise, student will be assigned a zero for the missed work.

Attendance

For each absence after the first three absences, two (2) points will be deducted from the final grade.  Three (3) tardies are equivalent to one absence.  It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor if arriving late.

Tentative Schedule:

Week 1 – Introduction; Read Chapter 1 of text; PowerPoint presentations on (1) Lighting Concepts and (2) Lighting Vocabulary, Lamps, and Luminaires

Week 2 – Lec/ppt on Chapter 5 Lamps and Fixtures; Ppt on (3) Luminaires; Lec/ppt on Chapter 7 –  (4) Special Effects

Week 3 – Lec/ppt Chapter 2 –  (5) Color and Reflectance; Field Trip

Week 4 –Test 1 (Due by 11:59 Wednesday night); and Lect/ppt on Chapter 6  – Practical Applications; (6) Residential Lighting: Kitchen and Dining Lighting;and

Week 5 –  Lec/ppt on Chapter 6, continued; (7) Residential Lighting:  Entries, Living areas, etc; Reflective ceiling plan Assignment;

Week 6 –  Reflective Ceiling Plan Due at end of class;  and (8) Commercial Lighting; Lighting Analysis Assignment

Week 7 – Lighting Analysis Presentation Due; Test 2 (Due by Wednesday night at 11:59 pm; and Lec/ppt on Chapter 3 – (9) Spacing

Week 8 – Lec/ppt on Chapter 4 – (10) Lighting Measurement; Lighting Calculations and Spacing assignments; and Assignments due at end of class, Test 3 (due Saturday night at 11:59 pm)

SPRING BREAK

Week 9 – Kitchen & Dining Room Lighting project

Week 10 – Kitchen & Dining Room Lighting project

Weeks 11- 14 Kitchen & Dining Room Lighting project Due on Tuesday April 5; Assign and Work on Final Project

Week 15 – Final Project Presentation on Thursday May 5

Week 16 – Comprehensive Final
