Grievance Procedure:
If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Chariman (Dr. Claudie Biggers), the Dean of STEM (Dr. Kathy Wetzel), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction (Dr. Voss), or the college President, (Dr. Russel Lowery-Hart), IN THAT ORDER.
Food and Drink:
You may bring food and drink into the lecture room, however, if you spill something please clean up after yourself. I do not recommend any open food or beverage containers in the lab rooms.
Cell Phones
Cell phones are not prohibited; however, please be considerate of others. Please keep all cell phones on silent or vibrate mode. If it is essential that you answer the call please step outside the classroom to complete the call. Absolutely no call shall be taken during a quiz, exam or lab practical. This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or lab practical.
Special Notes:
This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. Material included is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating the student's progress. Students are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in lecture.
Testing / Grading For The Semester
The total grade will be based upon both the lecture and the lab. Students must have a combined score of 60% (600 points) or better in the lecture and the lab portions for a passing grade.
Lecture:
One half (50%) of the total grade for the semester as follows;
5 major exams consisting of multiple choice, matching, and/or labeling diagrams. Each exam will be worth 100 points, with the four BEST exam scores used for a total value of 400 points maximum.
If you make less than 70 points on any major exam, you will be required to obtain 30 minutes of tutoring from the Science Enrichment Center prior to taking the next test. You will not be allowed to take the next test until after I have verification that you have received this tutoring.
5-7 lecture quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions. Each quiz will be worth 20 points, with the 5 best quiz scores used for a total value of 100 points maximum.
The lecture grade will total 500 points.
Laboratory:
One fourth (25%) of the total grade for the semester as follows;
Three (3) lab practicals consisting of 50 questions (fill in the blank and short answers). Each lab practical is worth 50 points for a total value of 150 points.
5-7 Lab quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions. Each quiz will be worth 10 points, with the 5 best quiz scores used for a total of 50 points.
Five (5) additional quizzes (reading assignments, homework, case studies). Each quiz worth 10 points for a total of 50 points.
The lab grade will total 250 points.
Final Exam:
One fourth (25%) of the total grade for the semester.
The final is a comprehensive exam consisting of multiple choice, matching, and / or labeling diagram questions. This exam will be a minimum of 125 questions to a maximum of 200 questions. The total value of the final will be 250 points.
Grading:
Grades will not be curved nor are extra credit assignments allowed / given.
900 - 1,000 points = A
800 - 899 points = B
700 - 799 points = C
600 - 699 points = D
599 points or less = F
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Attendance will be taken until the census day (February 4,2015), after that date attendance will not be taken.

Science Testing Center
Warren Hall 112
All tests, excluding take home exams and the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center during days scheduled by the teacher during normal Science Testing Center hours. Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time. Please note: No test may be started less than one and a half hours before the Science Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test. When using the Science Testing Center students will scan in and out with their Amarillo College student ID.

Mandatory Tutoring:
Warren Hall 110
In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory 30 minute tutoring session in the Science Enrichment Center or with his/her instructor before taking the next exam. Before getting mandatory tutoring, students must first schedule a tutoring time with the SEC by calling 806-345-5536, or visiting Warren Hall 110.
The SEC will do its best to accommodate a student's schedule withing the SEC hours of operation. This may require plenty of advanced notice by the student as time slots fill quickly.
Upon arrival in the SEC, students must inorm SEC staff that they are there for mandatory tutoring. Mandatory tutoring will not require remediation over a failed test.
The first instance of mandatory tutoring will be for 30 minutes. Subsequent instances of mandatory tutoring will be for 60 minutes.

Peer tutors are available in the Science Enrichment Center.
Cheating:
Cheating will not be tolerated in any Biology course at Amarillo College. On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract. Included in the contract is the following statement: “I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course. This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed. Cheating includes, but is not limited to” the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.”
You will not be allowed to take your tests in the Science Testing Center until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center.
*Please note: NO CELL PHONES is the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an “F” for the course
Drop date: (last day to drop with the course NOT appearing on the transcript) - February 4, 2015.
Withdrawal deadline: April 23, 2015
A grade of W will be given for a student initiated drop or withdrawal on or before April 23, 2015. You may not drop or withdraw after Thursday, April 23, 2015 without permission of the Biology Department. You must petition the department, in writing, for review of a late withdrawal. This request will be reviewed by the entire full time faculty of the Biology Department.
