Course Description:  An introductory study of the elements of geography with an emphasis on culture regions.

 

 

After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to:

 The student will develop a greater appreciation for the subject of geography in today's global community.

Trace the development of the spatial distribution of the major landmasses on the earth.

Explain Earth/Sun relationships.

Explain different classifications of climate and what factors work together to create those climates.

Explain the major and minor elements of weather and climate.

Explain plate tectonics and the formation of landforms.

Explain the workings of the hydrologic system.

Explain the spatial distribution of human activities on a global basis.

Explain the basics of latitude, longitude, and cartography.

Explain geographic linkages between human and physical geography in regional contexts.

Explain the five basic themes in geography.

Exams.   There will be three major examinations during the semester plus a final exam available Monday-Wednesday, December 8-10 until Midnight on Wednesday, December 10.  Exams will be multiple choice and cover the readings.  Students will not be allowed to drop an exam grade. All four of the exam grades count.  Each exam is worth 100 points.

Makeup Exams. There are no makeup exams without prearrangement with the instructor.  If a student misses an exam, the student can replace it with an extra credit book review.

Attendance

As a requirement of the class, students must send an email to the instructor before June 16th and inform the instructor that they are attending the class. Students that do not send this email will be dropped from the class by the office of the Registrar.

Attendance Policy:  Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. In this case, it means reading the assigned books and studying.
