PHED-1306-001 First Aid

Prerequisites

Course Description

Instruction and practice for emergency care. Designed to enable students to recognize and avoid hazards within their environment, to render intelligent assistance in case of accident or sudden illness and to develop skills necessary for the immediate and temporary care of the victim. Successful completion of the course may enable the student to receive a certificate from a nationally recognized agency.

Student Performance

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.
\ 2. Help someone who is choking.
\ 3. Do the work of an unconscious persons heart and lungs until medical help arrives.
\ 4. Keep an injured person safe from further injury and as comfortable as possible until medical help arrives.

By the end of the course the student should be able to satisfactorily perform the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 70% competency level, based on the completion of weekly quizzes, section tests, skills test in first aid CPR and the final exam.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures.

Grading Criteria

1. Attendance – 10%

\ 2. Weekly Quizzes – 55%
\
\ 3. Skills Tests – 10%
\
\ 4. First Aid Kit – 10%
\  Students will put together a first aid kit for either home or automobile using knowledge gained during the course of the class.
\
\ 5. Final Exam – 15%
\ Comprehensive written final exam. Students may be exempt from the final exam:
\ - Instructor’s choice

\ 6. Semester Grades
\ A = 89.5 – 100 D = 59.5 = 69.4
\ B = 79.5 – 89.4 F = 59.4 OR BELOW
\ C = 69.5 – 79.4

All students must arrange makeup classes with instructor.

Attendance

1. Attendance – 10%
\   a.  If a class is missed, arrangements must be made to make up the missed material.
\   b.  You will be responsible for contacting a classmate or the instructor to determine
\ what material/skills tests/written tests you missed in your absence and to make arrangements to make up missed work.
\
\ You will be required to scan in and out each time you visit the facility. To do this, you
\ must have a current ID. You must bring your ID card with you each time you visit the
\ facility to gain access at the front desk and to record your attendance. A good visit is at least 75 minutes.
