EMSP-1501-DC002 Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
Corequisite: EMSP 1163 of same course section, HITT 1305 and BIOL 2401
Preparation for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Basic. Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an emergency service or other specialized services.

\ \The goal of this course is such that the student will be able to describe and list the EMT's roles and responsibilities, legal issues, and medical terminology appropriate for prehospital providers. The student will be expected to perform appropriate management procedures required of the Emergency Medical Technician - Basic for:
\ \In order to successfully complete this course, the student will be required to read and understand text assignments, attend lectures and take notes accordingly, and complete and document the required clinical rotations per instructions issued in class. The student will also be expected to develop a sufficient mastery of the following required skills:

All skills exams must be performed to a level deemed satisfactory by the skills examiner. \ \The skills examiner will use the criteria of the Texas Department of State Health Services and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to evaluate skills performance. \ \The skills examination forms are on Blackboard for study, practice, and evaluation. Students are expected to complete skills examinations on the date scheduled. Note: \ \This domain is assessed with each Comprehensive Exam and the Final. \ \Specific details for each category provided the first class meeting. \ | \
The clinical (EMSP-1163) letter grade will be the same as EMSP-1501 classroom, final average - provided the clinical rotations are successfully completed as evaluated by the EMSP program faculty and the clinicans assigned for each clinical shift. Failure to successfully complete the clinical course also constitutes failure of the classroom (EMSP-1501) course.
\ \CPR Exam:
\ \The American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support written and skills examination will be administered at the beginning of the semester. All students are required to take and pass these examinations. A score of 84% is the minimum passing score for the written exam. ANY STUDENT, WHO FAILS THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, OR ANY PART OF THE SKILLS EXAMINATION, WILL BE REQUIRED TO DROP THE COURSE. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

\ \A quiz will be administered at the end of each week covering the material discussed that week and/or previous weeks during lecture.

Chapter Objectives:
\ \Students will be expected to complete each of the objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter throughout the semester. These objectives MUST be typed and turned in on the day of each exam. An average of all the objectives will count as a single quiz at the end of the semester, with randomly selected objectives counting as individual quizzes.

Make-Up Policy:
\ \A student who will not complete any exam on the scheduled day must contact the instructor before the scheduled exam. If the absence is excused, the exam must be take when the student returns to class either on the high school campus during class or after 5:30 pm on the Amarillo College West Campus. Students are encouraged to complete any quiz or exam before an absence if at all possible. A grade of "0" for that exam will be averaged if this policy is not followed.
\ \NIMS Courses:
\ \Students are required to complete two NIMS courses. These courses are free and are provided through FEMA. Print each course certificate and bring to your instructor. Failure to complete one or both of these courses by the assigned due date will result in 50 points being deducted from the final exam. The links for each course is:
\ \Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. It is the responsibility of the student to attend each class. Quizzes and examinations will be administered at the beginning of class and will NOT be passed out late and cannot be made up if missed (please see the Grading and Make-Up policies for more information).
\ \NO MORE THAN 10 CLASS SESSIONS MAY BE MISSED. IF THE STUDENT MISSES MORE THAN 10 CLASS SESSIONS, THEY WILL BE ADVISED TO WITHDRAW FROM THE COURSE OR RECEIVE A GRADE OF "F."
