FOOD/DRINK:  It is the policy of the Mathematics and Engineering Department that food and drink be allowed in the classroom at the instructor’s discretion, but food and drink are not allowed in Computer Labs.

PHONE/PAGERS:  It is the policy of the Mathematics and Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms and the Computer Labs.  No texting is allowed in class.  If a student is texting during any part of class time, the instructor reserves the right to collect that cell phone and keep it until the end of the class period.  Cell phone use during any exam in this course is not allowed under any circumstances.  Any student attempting to use a cell phone during any exam will receive an immediate zero on that exam and may be subject to further disciplinary actions in accordance with the Amarillo College Student's Rights and Responsibilities document.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

1. BE ON TIME: Students need to be on time to every class meeting.  It is distracting and disrespectful to the class when you arrive late.  If an emergency arises and you cannot attend class, please e-mail or call to let me know that you are not just skipping class.
2. BE PREPARED: Students need to have all homework completed and ready to turn in when class begins.  You also need to have already printed the class notes pages for the day from the AC Connect course under the "Lessons" main menu option to be ready to take notes.
3. BE RESPECTFUL:  Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.  This includes, but is not limited to:  cell phones and texting; abusive language and/or behavior; talking while instructor is lecturing; sleeping; leaving class early; arriving late; and getting up during lecture to go to the trash can or restroom.
4. GUEST LECTURER/SUBSTITUTE BEHAVIOR:  If a substitute should come in to teach the class, you are expected to be on your best behavior and treat him/her with the highest respect.  As future teachers, please give that substitute teacher the same respect you would want if you were asked to substitute teach a class.

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY:  Scholastic dishonesty (cheating and plagiarism) of any kind will not be tolerated in this course and will result in a non- replaceable grade of zero on the assignment or exam involved.  Thus, if you are caught cheating on an exam, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of replacement of that grade.  Please keep your eyes on your own exam paper, and do not be surprised if I ask the class to spread out as much as possible during a test.  Students are expected to do their own work on each paper, exam, and project in this course.  If you are caught cheating on the project, you risk being removed from the course and receiving an F for the course.  Further action at a higher level may be sought if necessary.  Scholastic dishonesty is clearly defined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities in the Student Conduct and Responsibilities section of the Amarillo College Student Handbook.  

HOMEWORK/CLASS ACTIVITY GRADES: Class Activities will occur several times per semester during class.  They will be unannounced.  You won’t want to miss them because these activity grades help you learn the concepts of the lesson in a fun activity.  The grades are usually a 100 for participation and can significantly help your homework average.  If you are not in attendance for a class period in which we conduct an activity, your grade for that assignment will be a zero and cannot be made up because you were not here for the activity.  This can significantly hurt your homework average.  You need to plan to be here for each and every class period.  It will significantly help your course average.

Homework will be assigned after each section covered in class.  All students will have the option of completing the homework with written pencil and paper work or with online work using MyMathLab.  All homework is due at the beginning of the next class after it is assigned and is not to be worked on in class.  You will receive credit for each problem completed correctly and will receive no credit for those left undone, not completed according to the requirements below, or done incorrectly.  Assignments not completed by hand nor done online by the due date will receive a grade of zero in the gradebook. Note that each homework assignment will require one to two hours of time outside of class.  You may check your written homework before class with the homework solutions manual in my office.  Please make an appointment with me ahead of time if you wish to do so.  No late homework will be accepted.  Any homework turned in that does not meet the requirements will not be accepted.  Two lowest homework grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. 

Written Homework Requirements:

1. Use pencil and loose leaf notebook paper.  No spiral edged paper or ink pen work is accepted. 
2. Please write neatly and circle or box your final answer.  (Neat and organized papers usually get better grades.)
3. Put a heading of your Name, Date, Course and section #, Homework # AND textbook section number on the upper left hand corner of the first page.
4. Fold your paper lengthwise to make a "tall" rectangle with your first page's heading clearly visible when you turn it in.  That way I can quickly look to see whose paper and what assignment this is.  Thanks!!

Online Homework Requirements:

1. Online homework must be completed by the due date marked in our MyMathLab course.
2. You can access the online homework through the MyMathLab link in the main menu of our AC Connect Blackboard course.  Mozilla Firefox (or Google Chrome) is the recommended browser for this software.  Please have your pop-up blocker turned off.  You must have a mymathlab access code which often comes bundled with your textbook in a red and white folder to register the first time you use MyMathLab.  If you used MyMathLab in your previous Math 1350 course, you may be able to use that same Pearson Account for this course because we use the same textbook for both courses.  If it has been less than a year and the same textbook is used for both courses, then you will be able to use the same access code for both courses.  Just use the same username and password this semester when you register into MyMathLab that you used in your previous course and you should be able to get into our MyMathLab course this semester with no additional cost.  The MyMathLab main menu will have "Homework" as one of the options.

 EXAMS:  There will be four major Chapter exams and a comprehensive Final exam taken in class.  No make-up exams will be given in accordance with the Math Department’s policies.  To compensate for this, you may replace one lowest Chapter exam grade with the grade you make on the Final at the end of the semester if it is a higher grade.  If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam, you may schedule to take the exam early in the Math Testing Lab, but NO exams will be given after they are given in class.  No cell phone use of any kind will be allowed during your exams in this course.  A grade of zero for that exam will be awarded if you attempt to use your cell phone while taking any exam in this course.  If you score below 70 on any exam, you will be required to meet with your instructor for two 30 minute sessions or you will be required to spend at least one hour in the Math Outreach Center before being allowed to take the next exam.  Consult with your instructor for instructions in this matter if you make lower than a 70 on an exam.

FINAL EXAMINATION:  The Final exam is comprehensive and taken in class.  The Final exam for this course will be given at 9 AM on Wednesday, May 13^th, 2015 in this classroom.
