Prerequisites

Course Description

Continued development of discourse analysis and interpreting skills for increasingly complex tasks. Utilization of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting scenarios including monologues and dialogues. Emphasizes skills development, self-analysis and peer evaluation.

  1. \  Students will demonstrate the ability to use elevated register English vocabulary correctly and in context.

  3. \ Students will demonstrate understanding of current theories and testing practices related to interpreting between ASL and English.

  5. \ Students will demonstrate the ability to render a spoken English source message into ASL signed target message with 75% accuracy.

  7. \ Students will demonstrate the ability to render a spoken English source message into an English signed target language with 75% accuracy.

  9. \ Students will demonstrate the ability to render a signed ASL source into a spoken English target message with 75% accuracy.

  11. \ Students will demonstrate the ability to render a written English source message of approximately 220 words into an ASL signed target message with a 7 minute time limit with 80 % accuracy.

Final grade average for this course is computed as follows:

Attendance/participation = 10%

Quizzes = 30%

Final Exam = 25%

Final course averages will be calculated and assigned letter grades. It is assumed that the student will achieve at least a 75% on objectives 3-6 and 80% on objective 7 above.

Attendance

Class Participation:  This class involves performance based instruction.  Students will work in small groups, individually, as well as one-on-one with the instructor.  Attendance will be taken.  Regular and punctual attendance to class is required to succeed in this course. If the student is to be absent, it is the responsibility of the student to communicate that absence to the instructor.
