MUAP-2172-001 Piano Minor

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Audition or instructor consent

Course Description

One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. For music majors, in their minor area of performance. Emphasis on development of technique, musicianship and repertoire; performance opportunities in student recitals.

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. Student Performance

\ This course is offered for students who have successfully completed MUAP 1171, MUAP 1172, and MUAP 2171, having passed the Piano Proficiency Exam, and wish to continue piano studies, either as additional elective credit, or else to complete the four semester requirement of piano study.  By the end of the semester, the student will be able to:

\

\ 1. Perform 2 to 4 works of intermediate level piano literature

\

\ 2. Study several accompaniments to works for solo instrument/voice and piano, and be able to perform at least one accompaniment.

\

\ 3. Further develop sight-reading skills at the piano.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Consistent, daily practice is essential for the improvement of piano skills.  Students should practice at least 6 days per week, for a minimum of 30 minutes per day, and a total of 3 to 5 hours weekly.  Students are expected to be "performance-ready" on all assigned material for each lesson.

Grading Criteria

\ Each weekly lesson will be graded, according to improvement and effort shown on weekly assignments. Students are expected to practice for 3 to 5 hours per week, divided evenly among the days of the week. Weekly grades will be based on the following criteria:

\

\ A Entire assignment learned and presented in a polished manner

\

\ B Assignment learned, with a few problems

\

\ C Assignment attempted, with many difficulties

\

\ D Poorly prepared lesson, with little outside practice demonstrated

\

\ F Very poorly prepared lesson, with no outside practice demonstrated; or absent from lesson without prior notification (one unexcused absence is allowed)

\

\ A final playing exam, consisting of  prepared pieces learned throughout the semester, will be performed for the instructor during the last lesson of the semester, generally during the final week of the semester.  this performance will receive a grade based on the above scale.  Students will also be given the optional opportunity of performing on a student recital.

\

\ The final grade for the course will be determined by averaging all weekly grades, which will be worth 75% of the total grade, and the final exam grade, worth 25% of the final grade.

\

\ The student must contact the instructor prior to the scheduled lesson time to set up a makeup lesson time, at the instructor's discretion.

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. One unexcused absence will be allowed, without affecting final grade. The second unexcused absence will be recorded as an "F" in the gradebook. Three unexcused absences will result in an "F" for the final grade.

Calendar

\ First lesson:     Meet with instructor; determine individual goals for semester, choose textbook/music, and receive first practice assignment.

\

\ 2nd lesson:       Prepare the given assignment, and bring all required materials to lesson.

\

\ 3rd and subsequent lessons:   Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.

\

\ Final lesson, given during last week of the semester:  All pieces learned throughout the semester will be performed for the instructor, for a grade worth 25% of the semester grade.

\ Practice pianos are available:

\

\ Piano lab, Room 203:12 electronic pianos with headphones, available when room is not being used for classes.

\

\ Practice Rooms:  located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice.
