Course Description

A detailed study of the human organism according to levels of chemical and structural organization with special reference to cytology, histology, and organs of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and fluid and electrolyte balance.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE, COMPETENCIES AND OBJECTIVES: After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department.

BIOL 2401: Anatomy & Physiology I

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
  2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions in each system.
  3. Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
  4. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
  5. Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
  6. Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
  7. Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
  8. Locate and identify anatomical structures.
  9. Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems and virtual simulations.
  10. Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
  11. Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.
  12. Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.
  13. Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills, including, but not limited to, inferring, integrating, synthesizing and summarizing to make decisions, recommendations and predictions.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to have prepared for lecture and lab by reading the course texts.

Communication of most grades and class information will be through ACConnect on our class homepage and through your AC email account. You must access these accounts regularly to stay current with class and college information.

\ \

You must keep your returned papers in the case of any disputed records.

\ \

Cell phones are allowed in the silent or vibrate mode during regular lecture/lab.  If you must take an emergency call, please leave quietly.  No earphone use in class. If you abuse this privilege the instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave class or the instructor may read your message/screen to the class.

\ \

Cell phones must be OFF and OUT OF SIGHT during exams, practicals and quizzes.  If phone use is observed a grade of ZERO will be given for the exam.

\ \

Food and drink is allowed except during dissection labs.  You must clean up after yourself or risk losing a quiz grade.

\ \

Please avoid any appearance of cheating.  Cheating will result in a grade of zero for the exam or quiz.  No one will be allowed to begin an exam after anyone leaves the room. 

\ \

If you must leave the classroom, please do so quietly.  If leaving become disruptive, the instructor will not allow returns to class.

Grading Criteria

A = 100 - 89.5%, B = 89 - 79.5%, C = 79 - 69.5%, D = 69 - 59.5%, F = 59% or less.

It is not necessary to contact the instructor if you are going to miss class unless it will be a prolongued absence.  Don't worry.

\ \

No makeups without written excuse such as doctor's note, etc.  No makeups for major exams, the drop grade is for this purpose.

\ \

No late work.  

\ \

If you receive a grade of 70% or less on any major exam you must have 30 minutes of free tutoring from the Science Enrichment Center before you are allowed to sit for the next exam.  I must receive notice from the lab that you have completed the tutoring. The Instructor tutor option is one time only, by appointment and at my discretion. Drop grades and/or skipping an exam are not exceptions to the tutoring requirement. Tutoring is not negotiable. See the Testing Center Policy at the end of the Syllabus for more information.

Contested grades either for the purpose of math errors or disputed questions must be submitted by email with the appropriate supporting evidence or explanation included.

A student who has a grievance concerning an academic course in which he or she is enrolled should make an appeal in the following order to the:

Attendance

\ Attendance is absolutely necessary to be successful in this course.  Attendance will be taken each class day.

Additional Information

Science Testing Center:

Warren Hall 112

All tests, excluding take-home exams and final exams, will be taken in the Science Testing Center during days scheduled by the teacher during normal Science Testing Center hours.  Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time.  Please note:  No test may be started less than one and a half hours before the Science Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and will return it to you when you turn in your test.

When using the Science Testing Center students will scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I.D.

Mandatory Tutoring:

Warren Hall 110

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory tutoring session in the Science Enrichment Center or with his/her instructor before taking the next exam. Before getting mandatory tutoring, students must first schedule a tutoring time with the SEC by either calling (806 345-5536) or visiting (Warren Hall 110).

The SEC will do its best to accommodate a student’s schedule within the SEC hours of operation. This may require plenty of advanced notice by the student as time slots fill quickly.  Upon arrival in the SEC, students must inform SEC staff that they are there for mandatory tutoring. Mandatory tutoring will not require remediation over a failed test. The first instance of mandatory tutoring will be for 30 minutes. Subsequent instances of mandatory tutoring will be for 60 minutes.

The Instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus at any time, assignment dates are an estimate only.
