Course Description

Study of the pathology and general health management of diseases and injuries across the life span. Topics include etiology, symptoms and the physical and psychological reactions to disease and injuries.

Student Performance

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives with a minimum 75 percent competency level based on the completion of quizzes, clinical exercises and a minimum of four major exams and a comprehensive final exam.

Learning Outcomes / Objectives:  Upon satisfactory completion in this course of study in pathology, the student will be able to do the following

1. Distinguish environmental factors, physical, psychosocial, and cognitive characteristics of various diseases and conditions; and identify implications of therapeutic interventions for common diseases and conditions.

2. Identify the pathological conditions and etiological facotrs which require special procedures in the removal, handling, preparation and disposition of human remains.

3. Demonstrate a knowledge  of diseases and related terminology which will enable competent communication with members of the medical community, allied health professionals and surviving family members.

4. Describe the benefits from postmortem examination of human remains.

5. Understand the relationship between the disease process and pre-embalming analysis.

General information / Rationale

1. To provide adequate knowledge to relate embalming, pathology, restorative art and other related subject areas.

2. To foster healthful living habits through an understanding of the normal structure and function of human anatomical structures.

3. To develop respect for human remains.

4. To be able to facilitate communication with members of other allied health areas.

5. To promote an appreciation of and an interest in the human body as a subject for independent study and continuing intellectual growth.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance procedure:

If a student is having a problem with the course policies or with the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Director of the Mortuary Science Program (Mr. Rankin), the Dean of Allied Health (Mr. Rowr),  the Associate Vice-President for Instruction, or the College President, in that order.

The student must follow the proper order for chain of command.

Grading Criteria

Students must have a combined score of 75% or better for a passing grade.  Percentages for the final grade will be as follows:

Clinical exercises = 150 points.  5-7 exercises that  will consist of discussion and / or case studies.  The five highest exercises will be used to calculate exercise point total.

Quizzes = 200 points.  5-7 quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  The five highest quiz scores will be used to calculate the quiz point total.

Chapter exams = 400 points.  Five major exams consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams and true/false questions.  The four highest exam scores will be used to calculate the exam point total.

Final exam = 250 points.  This will consist of a comprehensive exam to include multiple choice, matching, labeleing diagrams and / or true and false type questions.  This will be a minimum of 150 questions to a maximum of 200 questions.

920 - 1,000 points = A

830 - 919 points = B

750 - 829 points = C

Below 749 points = F

No make-ups will be allowed for quizzes, tests, or exercises  unless Amarillo College computer systems exhibit technical problems.  Extensions then will be scheduled by the instructor.

If you have scheduling conflicts or personal computer problems or miss any assignment due dates, a grade of zero will be given.

Attendance

\ Although this will be an online format, regular on line attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to meet assignment due dates.  Again, no make-ups will be given for any missed assignment, quiz, or test. this will also include any personal computer problems or scheduling conflicts.
