Course Description

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

  • Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  • Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  • Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics.
  • Explain the role of probability in statistics.
  • Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.
  • Describe and compute confidence intervals.
  • Solve linear regression and correlation problems.

  Expected Student Behavior

  You are expected to behave in the classroom, Math Testing Center and the Outreach Center in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to: tardiness/leaving early; electronic device noises; talking during lectures; abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language; abusive, offensive, or disrespectful demeanor toward AC faculty, staff, students and/or property. In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered. If you fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student’s Rights & Responsibilities” you will be subject to disciplinary action which may include, but is not limited to: removal from the classroom; consultation with the Mathematics and Engineering Department Chair and/or other AC authority; withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

  Policy On Cheating and Plagiarism

  Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in any math course at Amarillo College. On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract. Included in the contract is the following statement: "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to: the use of an unapproved calculator, the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones, copying or leaving the classroom with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test." You will not be allowed to take your tests until this contract is signed and on file in your instructors office.  Please Note: NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an "F" for the course.

  Grading Criteria

  Your semester grade (90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, below 60 F) will be calculated using the following weights:

  15%	Lab Assignments (drop lowest 1 grade)
  50%	Exams
  20%	Final Exam

  Four major exams will be given this semester in addition to a comprehensive final exam.  If the final exam is higher than the lowest major exam, the final exam grade will replace it.  Otherwise, all major exam grades will be counted in the final average.  Major exams will be taken in class or in the Math Testing Center and kept on file in the instructor's office.  The final exam is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at 7:00pm.

  Attendance

  Daily attendance is necessary in both lecture and lab to be successful in this course.  You should be on time for class, prepared for class, and actively participate and be on task in class daily.  It is the responsibility of the student to sign the attendance sheet daily.  Nonattendance will be recorded as an absence, and no differentiation will be made as to excused or unexcused absences.  Note that the last day to drop is April 23.  Students who stop attending class and do not officially drop will receive a grade of F if their average falls below a 60.

  Additional Information

  Homework problems will be submitted online using Aplia.  All homework problems can be accessed online via Aplia, located at http://login.cengagebrain.com.  Students will submit answers to all problems on this website (please note:  Mozilla is the preferred browser of Aplia).  Aplia automatically grades each problem and offers step by step help as you work.  Due dates for the online homework will be announced in class.  Beyond the due date, students can view but not change the online assignments.

   LAB ASSIGNMENTS

  Labs will consist of completing written lab assignments and occasionally computer assignments using Excel covering the concepts we have discussed in lecture. Each lab assignment will be posted in Blackboard for the student to print and bring to class.  In most cases, students will be allowed to work in groups. Attendance in lab is mandatory. All lab assignments will be submitted during lab and graded by the instructor. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered. I do not accept late lab assignments.  If you are not in lab, you cannot turn the lab in at the next class meeting.

   

  LATE WORK / EXTRA CREDIT

  Late work is NOT accepted and extra credit is NOT given under any circumstance.  Due dates will be announced in class so be sure you are in class to keep up with your work.

   Students will be required to log in to Blackboard regularly to check the course announcements, e-mail, grades, and print class handouts.  To access our course area in Blackboard:
