Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Placement by an Accuplacer score of 40 or below, a THEA score of 179 or below or an equivalent score on a state-approved test

Course Description

Arithmetic review of whole numbers and fractions; decimals; ratio and percent; measurement and basic geometry; signed numbers; simple algebraic expressions; applications.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

1. Lecture/Lab: You will attend a structured lecture 4 days, 2 days, or one day a week depending on which class you are attending. Tests will be taken in the Testing Center outside of class time.
2. Course section video lectures through MyMathLab are available for all Math 0301 students in the Student Outreach Center in the WSC Engineering Building Room 104.  Video tapes are also available to view in the Learning Center, AC Hereford Campus.
3. Tutoring assistance is available, at no charge on a limited basis, in the Hereford Campus Learning Center (Room 126, 379-2713) or Student Outreach Center located in the Engineering Building Room 104, WSC (371-5119).
4. NEW book purchases include MyMathLab as a resource for instruction and include numerous examples.

Please– GET HELP at the first sign of a problem.  Talk to your instructor, talk to a tutor, talk to someone in your class.  Don’t wait until a little problem has become a big problem.


STUDENT PERFORMANCE / LEARNING OUTCOMES:             

After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the Mathematics Department.

• Apply the four arithmetic operations using order of operations on signed numbers, fractions, and decimals;
• Evaluate the perimeter, area, and volume of basic geometric shapes;
• Apply conversions between fractions, decimals, and percents;
• Apply conversions within the U.S. system of measurement and the Metric system of measurement;
• Apply mathematical skills to evaluate equations from various types of stated problems, then state solutions complete sentences;
• Evaluate data from tables and graphs;
• Apply the distributive property, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions;
• Solve algebraic equations by performing the addition property of equality
