Expected Student Behavior

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

HOW THE CLASS WORKS: The instructor will provide individual instruction and critique of student work during class periods. Consequently, attendance is very important. Projects/exercises and research for projects/exercises will be done in class and out of class. Students will complete design projects/exercises, a design journal, participate as expected in class (see participation grade), and participate in private and group critiques for a final grade.  Two tests will be given.

RESOURCES IN AC CONNECT: This is a traditional course that you will attend during scheduled class times, but we will also have course resources posted in AC Connect. To find our AC Connect course, go to http://www.actx.edu/ and click on the "AC Connect" link (direct link is https://acconnect.actx.edu/). Your login for our AC Connect course is the same as your ADNetID. If you have password or ID issues, please contact AskAC at 806-371-5000. Our AC Connect course resources will not be available until after classes begin.

CRITIQUES:  Critique allows the class to discuss design and conceptual issues and evaluate the effectiveness of each project. Respectful communication is of the utmost importance. This part of our classroom activities is crucial to the creative and technical learning process, giving us an opportunity to gain knowledge from each other. DO NOT MISS CRITIQUE. HAVE YOUR WORK READY BY the beginning of class. DO NOT WORK DURING CRITIQUE.

CIVILITY: Disruptions and/or any behavior that the instructor considers inappropriate will not be tolerated and will result in dismissal from the class. Every student deserves and will receive the respect of others. Every student is expected to be involved and engaged with other students and the instructor.

PARTICIPATION: Be an active part of class and critique. In addition to the requirement to be in class for demonstration, lecture and work time, your presence is a source of insight and learning for all class members. The impact of your full participation cannot be overestimated. Also see Grading, Class Participation Grade.

CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITY: You must clean up your workspace and pick up all the materials you use before you leave class.

PLAGIARISM: The student understands that plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class. Plagiarism is defined by the Amarillo College Student Handbook as: “...the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another’s work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one’s own written work.” This also includes copying Internet or written sources in any course project/exercise without citing the source, as well as copying another student’s work as your own work. If a student is found plagiarizing any material in the course, it will result in a grade of "0" for that project/exercise and can result in disciplinary action and expulsion of the student from the course.

COURSE CONTENT: Students understand that in the study of art styles and art history that occasionally there may be a tasteful representation of a nude (such as in Greek Classical Art), and agree to handle that content in a mature and responsible way.

COPYRIGHT NOTICE: Students must be aware and responsible for the Copyright Notice for the course: The materials on this course website are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for the purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further disseminated.

DROPPING, WITHDRAWING, AND NON-CREDIT STATUS: The student is responsible for dropping courses, withdrawing from college by the last day to drop a course, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. See the Amarillo College master calendar on the AC website and our course calendar for the date of the last day to drop a course.  The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop a course.

DISABILITY SERVICES: Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements is responsible for contacting disAbility Services (Student Service Center, Room 119).  Any accommodation of this kind for this course has to be approved and processed by disAbility Services.  To qualify for services students must: provide documentation of the disability or sign a release to obtain such documentation. The student must also complete paperwork for the disAbility Services office, and make an appointment to review necessary services. For more information, please call 806-371-5436.

STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Students are responsible to be aware of “Student Rights and Responsibilities" - link https://www.actx.edu/programs/index.php?module=article&id=209  .

Projects: Each project (and accompanying exercises) covers a specific chapter (or chapters) on the design elements and principles. You will be required to read assigned chapter presentations provided in our AC Connect course as we progress in the course.  Reading assigned chapters from the optional textbook is helpful to the student but not required. Project (and exercises) will cover the design elements and principles: Line, Shape, Pattern, Texture, Space, Motion, Value, Color, Unity, Emphasis and Focal Point, Scale and Proportion, Balance, Rhythm, etc. The student should have a thorough understanding of the topics as well as a variety of materials and media by the end of the course work. The design journal can include notes, thumbnail sketches, collages, collection of images that illustrate a concept from your chapter presentation and optional textbook reading and from projects/exercises.  You will turn in your design journal several times during the semester as instructed, and I will randomly check your design journal in class.

Midterm and Final Exam (Vocabulary Tests) - 15 points possible each, so 30 points possible for both tests.
There will be a midterm vocabulary test and a final vocabulary test.  Each test will cover design vocabulary covered in the course.  A test review will be provided for each test.  The test will be multiple choice, and delivered online through our AC Connect course.  Each test will be available for students to take on their own time online in our AC Connect course for a one week period.  Special arrangements to take the test in class can be made by the student by contacting the instructor at least one week before a test is given. The tests will be announced at least two weeks in advance of the time they will be available.

Class Participation Grade – 10 points possible

Points for the above participation grade requirements can be taken off by the instructor at the instructor's discretion.

I usually will have your course work graded within a week after the due dates.  I will keep your grades updated (within a week of the due dates) in our AC Connect course shell in your My Grades grade book.  You can also ask me privately for your grades any time during the semester.

Attendance

\ INSTRUCTOR ATTENDANCE POLICY

\

\ 1. Attendance and lateness: The student’s attitude and enthusiasm in class is a very important part of the final grade.  Consequently consistent attendance and promptness is required for a good grade.  You are responsible for being present to receive all course information, so it is important that you are present and on time.  If you are late, you will miss my introduction of the assignment for that day, and I do not like to give the assignment twice:-(.  If you are excessively absent or late, it will lower your grade.  Make sure you let me know if you are having problems that contribute to your absences and lateness - exceptions can be made for medical emergencies, family emergencies, or job related required activities as long as proof is given to the instructor. Also see how attendance will influence your grade in the Grading Criteria section under Participation Grade.

\

\ 2. Allowed absences:  Students are allowed one (1) week of necessary absences from class, i.e. two (2) days for Monday/Wednesday and two (2) days for Tuesday/Thursday classes.  It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor about all matters concerning attendance, such as, absences, arriving late to class, etc.  The student is also responsible for dropping courses by the last day to drop, withdrawing from college, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop.

\

\ See the Participation Grade for how much your grade is lowered by excessive absences, tardies, or leaving class early without permission from the instructor.

\

\ 3. Attendance Sheet:  Students are responsible for signing the attendance sheet or responding to roll call each class period.

\

\ 4. Severe Weather Conditions: If we are experiencing severe weather in this area (for example road closures due to icy and snow packed roads), I will be here if the campus has not closed, but do not risk your life in severe weather to come to class – I will let you make up the work for that day, and will excuse your absence in extremely bad weather.

\

\ 5. Making up work:  Make up work is allowed with a late penalty. It is your responsibility to get class assignments and announcements from me or another classmate if you miss any part of a class period.  If you are late, taking excessive breaks, not paying attention, or absent from class you must check in with me or other classmates to get the missed information.   I will not follow you around to give you missed assignments or announcements.
