An expanded study of dental assisting techniques with emphasis on four-handed dentistry and utilization of armamentarium for general practice and specialty procedures.

Student Performance

Given the course textbook, personal notes, and handouts, the student should:
\     1.   Learn technical terminology, facts, theories and principals associated with the various dental specialties.
\
\     2.   Apply knowledge learned in class to a dental office setting.
\
\     3.   Evaluate the learning experience from the perspective of the specific course objectives.

1.   Describe endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, and oral surgery.
\ 2.   Identify materials and instruments used in each of the specialities.
\ 3.   Describe the role and the responsibilities of the Dental Assistant in each of the specialties.
\ 4.   Explain various post-operative instructions given to patients following surgery, endodontic treatment, orthodontic treatment and periodontal surgery.
\ 5.   Define oral pathology and recognize normal/abnormal oral conditions.

Expected Student Behavior

\  The student is being guided to be a dental healthcare team member and as such, will learn the traits a skilled team member must have in order to acheive success. These traits include; punctuality, respect, attitude, character, teamwork, productivity and dress and grooming. The student will be expected to follow all OSHA, CDC, Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and other government agency mandates. We realize the student is not familiar with such structure therefore, the student will first recieve two correctional warnings. The first will be verbal, the second will be written. On the third infraction of the same type offense, points will be deducted from the students grade. Every attempt possible is made by the staff and faculty of this course to help the student to succeed in the dental profession

Grading Criteria

The final course grade will be calculated as follows:

The following grading scale will be used for all Dental Assisting courses:

A = 93 to 100

\ \

B = 84 to 92

\ \

C = 75 to 83

In order to be fair to students who are present and perform the required tasks and because of time restraints, most missed work, especially lab and clinical work can not be made up. Lab and clinical assignments usually involve the use of a partner. Without you they can not perform their assignments.

Missed written exams maybe made up on the designated "make-up" days. These dates will be given at the start of the class. In order to be fair to the students who take the exam at the scheduled time, make-up exams will lose 5% of their original value. Please note that make-up exams most likely will NOT be the same exam the class participated with.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class". Due to the amount of information contained in this course, the student who plans to succeed should attend all course sessions regulary and promptly. The student will need to come to class on time, fully prepared for that session, with the necessary materials."  There may be times when it is impossible to attend class due to illness or an emergency, but this course covers so much information in class that an absence can get the student behind and thus, miss some vital questions on an exam. In order to be fair, there is no distinction between an excused or unexcused absence. You may have up to 3 (three) absences in this class without affecting your grade. The 4^th (fourth) absence will reduce the overall grade by 10 points. Missing 4 class periods is close to missing  1/3rd of the semester and thus, 1/3rd of the vital skills for your chosen profession.

\ This class will have 7 major exams, one over each speciality : Endo. Orhto, Perio, Pedo and Oral Surgery plus Implants and a BIG exam over OSHA. There will be 4 demos over tray set-ups , instrument sequence and post op instructions in Endo, Ortho (wire change) Oral Surgery and  Perio. The final will be comprehensive over all material covered.
