Hi! I am looking forward to working with you this semester.

Please contact me by email (lkenney@actx.edu), through Messages in Blackboard, or via text (806.680.4348) if you would like to schedule a day and time to meet in person or Zoom online to get your questions answered or to receive additional guidance on course concepts. Flexibility in scheduling is available, so do not hesitate to ask for what works for you.

Know two things:

  1. I am here and ready to assist you and guide you at whatever level works for you. If you are at a level that permits you to work this course mostly independently, go for it. If you need assistance, a lot or a little, please communicate that. Many times what feels like a big thing holding you back is a small obstacle we can work on together to get past in a short period of time.
  2. There are many tasks to complete in the course. Every week, multiple tasks, for the entire 8 weeks. Block off time to get these assignments complete. This is how you will learn and how you will demonstrate competency with this material.

    OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF COURSE:

    Students will learn to prepare, format, and manage documents; create and enhance tables; and create a mail merge using Word 2010.

    By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the Learning Outcomes (Minimum Competencies) with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructor’s grading scale in the Office Administration Department.

    PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES):

    1. Reinforce beginning keyboarding knowledge and skills.
    2. Learn, practice, and apply word processing concepts and features.
    3. Demonstrate word processing proficiency through assessments and timed production tests.

    END-OF-COURSE OUTCOMES:

    Apply basic and advanced formatting skills and special functions to produce documents.

    PLAGIARISM, CHEATING AND INDIVIDUAL WORK ETHIC:  The Amarillo College policies and Code of Student Conduct is strictly adhered to when dealing with plagiarism, cheating and duplication of work product.  Any evidence of plagiarism, cheating or duplication of work product will result in a zero on the project or test in question.

    Chapter Exercises will be checked:  (Total 72 printed exercises)
    69-72 completed exercises = A (100%)
    65-68 completed exercises = B (89%)
    61-64 completed exercises = C (79)
    57-60 completed exercises = D (69)
    53-56 completed exercises = F (59)

    0-52 completed exercises = automatic course grade of F (regardless of other grades)
    Chapter Exercises must be completed.

     

    CHAPTER ASSESSMENTS, UNIT PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS,
    AND PRODUCTION TEST GRADING SCALE:

    There are no incompletes in this class. There is no “extra credit” to be earned. There are no make-up production tests for any reason. Production tests are timed; no extra time is allowed


    Chapter/Unit Assessments will be checked:

    78-75 completed assessments = A (100)   74-71 completed assessments = B (89)
    70-67 completed assessments = C (79)     66-63 completed assessments = D (69)
    62-59 completed assessments = F (59)     Below 58 completed assessments = 0
    If you do not complete at least 58 assessments (regardless of other grades), your course grade will be an F.

    Exercises and Assessments are due by 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening. There are NO exceptions to this—no late assignments will be accepted for ANY reason. Look ahead at your Course Schedule; work ahead where possible to ensure assignments are turned in on time.

    Staple together printed material assigned for each set of chapter exercises, each set of chapter assessments, and each set of unit performance assessments.  On the top sheet in the top right corner, key your first and last name; on the next line, the exercise number or assessment number.

    There are five production tests (including the comprehensive final exam). There are NO makeup production tests for ANY reason. Production tests are timed for one hour. No extra time will be allowed.

    If you have NO absences or tardies during the semester, three points will be added to the semester grade.

    Attendance

    Employees in the business world are expected to be at work promptly each day; therefore, students in business classes are expected to be in class promptly each day. This class meets one time per week. After one absence for any reason, two points will be deducted from the semester average for each absence above one. There are no excused absences. Three tardies equal one absence. If you are more than five minutes late to a class, it will be counted as an absence. If you have perfect attendance and no tardies, three points will be added to your semester average.
