Pharmacology Reviews & Rationales, 3rd Ed, (2013)

Publisher: Pearson

This book can be purchased in the West Campus bookstore and is available on the internet for anywhere from $25.00 to $45.00 depending on whether you buy a new vs. used textbook.  This book has lots of review questions, so if you purchase a used book, make sure that all of the answers are not already marked!

 

Nursing Math Simplified, Math Magic, 5th Edition, (2011)

Author:     Susan Garner Moore, RN, BSN

You may already have this great little math book- if so, please don’t buy another one.  This will be available in the West Campus bookstore and is available new online for around $25.00.  The editions have changed only slightly- the problems are mostly the same. 

Additional Suggested Textbook:  Any current (2014-2015) nursing drug guide.  To be used as reference for this course and will be used for clinical courses in summer 2014.

Books can be purchased on the Internet by visiting the web sites of the publishers, or at Amarillo College West Campus Bookstore. Be sure to tell the person assisting you in the AC Bookstore that you taking the Internet class (HPRS 2200) because books are different for the on-campus Pharmacology course. Student Performance

The graduate of the ADN Program will categorize the classification of drugs; calculate drug dosages; and identify the therapeutic use, routes of administration, indications, and contraindications of medications administered to all patients.

In the Role of Member of the Profession:

1.    Utilize an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards as they relate to the administration of medication in the care of all patients.

\ \

2.    Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in providing medication therapy in relation to professional nursing practice.

\ \

3.    Develop insight into the parameters and guidelines for quality nursing care to patients and families as it relates to medication administration.

\ \

In the Role of Provider of Patient-Centered Care:

4.    Function as a beginning nursing student to assist in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health for patients and families through knowledge of the general characteristics of pharmaceutical agents.

5.    Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning in understanding the specific characteristics of selected pharmaceutical agents in providing holistic-centered nursing care patients and families.

6.    Identify the unique psychological and sociological differences and health care practices within culturally diverse patients and families related to medication administration..

7.    Identify the basic principles of health teaching for patients and families in order to comply with medication regimens.

8.    Utilize basic nursing skills for the safe preparation and administration of pharmaceutical agents in the care of patients and families.

9.    Develop compassionate behaviors and appropriate communication skills for medication therapy with diverse patients and families.

10. Identify community resources available for meeting the needs of patients and families requiring medication therapy

Grading Criteria

Assignments will submitted online to the instructor.  Students will also be required to participate in online discussions with classmates.

75%-  Module exams

25%-  Final exam

Grades will be assigned based on total scores of:

            A=       90-100

\ \

            B=       80-89

\ \

            C=       75-79.9** Effective May 18, 2014

\ \

            D=       60-74

\ \

No grades will be rounded.  For example a grade of 79.9 = B

Calendar

Class schedule will be available before the first day of class.  This course will be completed in 7 weeks.

Course will have modules of study which will include dosage calculation, medication administration, pharmacological principles, anti-infective medications, blood-modifying agents, cardiac medications, endocrine system medications, gastrintestinal system medications, immune system medications, integumentary system medications, neurological and musculoskeletal system medications, psychiatric medications, renal system medications, reproductive system medications, respiratory system medications, visual and auditory medications.

Module exams will be taken online during a specified period of time.  The final exam will be comprehensive and will also contain new information from the last 2 weeks of study.

\ \

*Students who have general education course exams, which may conflict with exams in this course, are allowed to re-schedule the exam for this course on an individual basis with the consent of the instructor.
