MUAP-1187-006 Independent Study Elective
One 30-minute lesson per week, minimum three hours of outside practice per week required. Emphasis on basic technique and musicianship, with appropriate literature tailored to the needs/desires of the individual student.

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music. Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Students are expected to practice at least 30 minutes per day, for a total of 3 to 5 hours weekly.
Daily and final grades will be based on the following point scale:
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: Below 60
The following criteria will be used to determine your grade: Grade is based on attendance, attitude, and practice; not on performance ability. Students will be given a letter grade each week based on their performance and improvement from the previous week. The letter grades will be averaged with the final paper grade to determine the final grade.
REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS: Each student will perform individually and in groups throughout the semester. A one to three page paper is required expressing the student’s thoughts on Suzuki’s book Nurtured by Love.
FINAL EXAMINATIONS: Each student will perform individually and in a group on the final class.
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.
Week 1: Meet with instructor; discuss instrument and text requirements, receive first practice and reading assignment, watch first half of Nurtured by Love.
Week 2: Review previous week's assignments and watch second half of Nurtured by Love.
Week 3 & Subsequent Weeks: Each upcoming week’s assignment will be determined by the progress demonstrated during the previous week’s lesson.
Last week of the semester: Turn in paper, perform several pieces learned throughout the semester as a group and perform one piece learned throughout the semester as a solo., plus appropriate technical exercises such as studied vocalises will be performed for the instructor.
Practice rooms are available, located in Concert Hall south hallway; any rooms that are unlocked and contain a piano are available for individual practice when not in use by college faculty.
