MCHN-1338-002 Basic Machine Shop I

Course Description

A course that introduces the student to machining fundamentals. The student begins by using basic machine tools including the lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw and bench grinder. Machine terminology, theory, math, part layout and bench work using common measuring tools is included. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, housekeeping and preventative maintenance.

\ End-of-Course Outcomes:  Demonstrate proper use of the lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw, and bench grinder applying good housekeeping, proper safety, and preventative maintenance. Perform bench work including part layout, drilling, reaming, taping, press fitting, location of hole centers and surfaces; set up power saws for cutoff operation; demonstrate tooling maintenance, hazardous material handling, and preventative maintenance.

Expected Student Behavior

\  Textbook,Workbook,Notebook & Class Equipment

\ Students are required to have the specified textbook and workbook no later than the third class session. Failure to do this will result in the student receiving a five point reduction for the fourth class period and increases by five points each following day.The student is required to take notes during lectures, and to turn in a notebook. These notes need to be on three ring bound note book paper for grading prior to the final exam. Articles, accumulated information, and useful reference material that pertain to relative course topics will be counted towards the notebook grade. Notebook should contain syllabus, handouts, formula sheets, tests, assignments, and task list. All items will be graded from the notebook. Neatness of notebook will be graded.  This means no loose edges; grease or oil soaked pages WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED Student shall furnish a SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR( NO CELL PHONE CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED) and personal protective equipment which includes ANSI Z87.1 approved safety glasses. Student shall have their own personal hand tools similar to those on the department service tool list. Student shall furnish necessary computer media for information transfer. Student shall furnish required text and Handyman Pocket Handbook.

\ Safety Policy and PPE
\
\ Safety is everyone's job,and it starts before you enter the shop area. A machine shop has rotating machinery,high voltage electrical equipment,hot metal,sharp metal and chemicals,all of which can harm or even kill you. That is why the rules described below are needed.
\
\ Rule#1. Only Safety glasses' with side shields, that meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1 spec will be allowed.
\
\ Rule#2. Only long pants are allowed.
\
\ Rule#3. Only short sleeved close fitting Tee-shirts or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed
\
\ Rule#4. No open toed shoes are allowed,students should wear work boots or work shoes.
\
\ Rule#5. Hair over shoulder length needs to be secured safely with a hat, cap or hairnet.
\
\ Rule#6. No necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, rings or watches are to be worn in shop.
\
\ Rule#7. No horseplay of any type will be tolerated.
\
\ Rule#8. Any vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.
\
\ Rule#9. Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
\
\ Rule#10.No food or drink in shop.
\
\ Failure to comply with rules #1-#6 will result in the following disciplinary actions.
\
\ First offense. The student will receive a verbal reprimand from instructor and, be withdrawn from the class for that period receiving no grade for that day.
\
\ Second offense. The student will receive a written reprimand from instructor, removed from the class for two class periods reviving no points for either day. Any quizzes or test that occur during those classes cannot be made up and will counted as zero points.
\
\ Third offense. The student will be suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receive a FAILING grade for that class.
\
\ Failure to comply with rules #7-#9 will result in the student being immediately  suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receiving a FAILING grade for that class.

\ Tools, Equipment,
\
\ Tools and equipment specified for this class and any recommended preliminary class in the Machining Technology Curriculum are to be furnished by the student and be with the student during all lab activities. failure to have tools will result in the student receiving no lab grade for that class period.  All student tools should marked with the students initials for easy identification, these tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.

Grading Criteria

Students should complete all performance tasks on time at REQUIRED MASTERY LEVEL. Tasks, projects, and various assignments will be scored based on time; accuracy; neatness; completeness; procedure; skill; detail; motivation and attitude; safety practices; clean up; care of manuals, logbooks, and references; and other grading criteria. No task shall be rated until assignment is complete and correct. Complete shall include condition and cleanliness of equipment; clean up of work areas; tool condition and return of all supplies and materials to their proper location. Correct means that projects meets all print specifications in order to be graded.
 
Final (Overall) Grade Policy:
The final overall grade will be computed by adding the points earned as follows:

Makeup Policy
Students are responsible for getting notes from other students when absent. Lab activities will continue on schedule. Individuals will not receive credit for making up activities and there will not be special lab sessions. Some work can be caught up during regular lab times. Missing lab activities may prevent individuals from completing lab projects.

Homework/Quizzes and Final

Workbook/Homework will be assigned from each chapter covered in the textbook.These workbook and handout assignments will be looked at by the instructor at the beginning of each class period, failure to have daily homework complete will result in that student not being allowed in lab until homework is complete it will also result in the student in a zero grade placed in the preparedness section of the daily rubric.Written test is subject to, both materials covered in that chapter and any previously materials covered from prior machining classes.

Final: A comprehensive final will be given.

 

 

 

 

 

Attendance

  

 Attendance in class and lab participation is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning. Attendance and participation are graded on the Daily Rubric.
