Student Performance

Medical Assisting Clinical Procedures

The nature of the CMA clinical is such that students are involved in the direct delivery of patient care. The primary purpose of any course is to provide education for the students. However, when direct patient care is involved in the learning experience, the safety and well-being of patients are also of absolute concern.

If, in the instructor’s professional judgment, a student is unable to provide care to patients, and if this deficit is such that it cannot be remedied in the given clinical time, the student will be removed from the clinical setting, will receive an unsatisfactory grade and will not be permitted to take the National Exam.

Instructional content in the Medical Assisting Clinical Procedures course will focus on clinical procedures utilized within the medical offices.  Major components will include emergency medical care, the physical exam, basic pharmacology, and administration of medication.  Students will focus upon employability strategies and career development necessary for successful employment.  Students will participate in a work-based clinical externship within a medical office or equivalent health care facility.  Due to health care industry standards, exemplary attendance is mandatory.  All content standards and objectives must be mastered before students are eligible to attain established credentials and/or industry validation.  Students will utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts.  Teachers will provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction related to the study of medical assisting.

Clinical Internship

Student will participate in the clinical internship.

Learning Objectives:

Apply the theory, concepts and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

Student will demonstrate a working knowledge of internship eligibility requirements, conform to professional standards for health care workers, comply with required health regulations including proof of CPR and immunization status. They will wear proper clinical attire, report to clinical site on time and ready to work.

If the student is at the clinical site not in complete clean uniform including proper shoes and Amarillo College name tag, first offense the student will be sent home and not receive credit for that clinical day, Second offense the student will receive a failing grade or given the opportunity to withdraw form the course.

The student will notify the clinical site and the instructor when absent or late. conform to policies regarding performance of skills and scope of responsibility/practice, correctly and safely perform entry-level procedures under supervision of an instructor or clinical site preceptor. request assistance or clarification as needed. organize and effectively manage time, accurately and efficiently complete documentation required for clinical internship, participate in clinical internship evaluation process

Student performance grade will be based in part, on evaluations from the clinical sites
