Student Performance

The Student will:

  • Identify architecture, interiors, and furnishings by periods and styles
  • Use historical terminology
  • Compare various periods and styles
  • Understand the relationship of interior and architectural design to socio-economic and political issues
  • Understand theories of design and their application to the periods studied
  • Analyze the relationship of past design styles with present design styles
  • Further develop drawing and illustration skills
  • Develop research skills by increasing awareness of available resources

The student will identify architecture, interiors, and furnishings by periods and styles; define and use historical terminology; and examine historical periods and styles

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow the guildelines as defined in the AC Student Rights & Responsibilities which can be found on the AC Website.  Cell phones are to remain off and students may be asked to leave class if they are being disruptive and thus interferring with the learning environment.

Grading Criteria

A= 90 TO 100; B=80 TO 89;C=70 TO 79; D= 60 TO 69; F=BELOW 60

Lectures will not be repeated.  Students are responsible for getting class notes and class information from classmates following absences.

Late work will be accepted, but a 10 point penalty for every week that the submission is late will be applied to tests taken after deadline and the grading rubrics have penalties for late work built in.

Attendance

All students are requred to attend class or a 3 point deduction will be applied to final grade for unexcused absences.

Read Chapter 2 - Classical Civilizations and go through the online materials prior to completing discussion or Test 1

 

 

Design Project

Design Project 1 -You are a display designer for the local museum.  They are creating a new exhibition on the classical civilizations.  You are to create a vignette for a typical Roman villa interior.  You will need to research using historical web-sites to view how archeologists project the arrangement of a typical villa   and the types of furniture and accessories were used.  Create a virtual project board showing a plan for the vignette to be created, the pieces of historical furniture and accessories that need to be acquired by the museum or pulled from its storage areas for use in the project. You may want to create/illustrate a typical textile from the period or wall decorations using designs you have learned were prevalent during that era.  Remember that textiles were not necessarily used the way we use them today (i.e. upholstery).

You will submit this assignment through the Portfolio application discussed on the first day of class.  Check Forms on the left hand side of screen for instructions as to how to develop and submit work to your individual portfolio.

Design Project

Design Project 2 - The museum is now creating a new exhibit on Asian civilizations.  You are to create a vignette representing one of the Asian cultures covered in your text.  You will need to research using historical web-sites to view what archeologists and historians have discovered about these ancient cultures  and the types of furniture and accessories that were used.  Create a virtual project board showing a plan for the vignette to be created, the pieces of historical furniture and accessories that need to be acquired by the museum or pulled from its storage areas for use in the project. You may want to create/illustrate a typical textile from the period or wall decorations using designs you have learned were prevalent during that era.  Remember that textiles were not necessarily used the way we use them today (i.e. upholstery).

Read Chapter 8 - Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo in France and Spain; go through the online materials prior to completing the Design Project or Test 4

 

 

Design Project

Design Project 4: The museum is now creating an exhibition on the French periods of design (Baroque, Rococo, Empire, and Neo-Classic).  You are to create a vignette of a typical French interior for each of the periods.  You will need to research using historical web-sites to view typical French period interiors and the types of furniture and accessories (including art work) used.  Create a virtual project board showing a plan for each vignette to be created, the pieces of historical furniture and accessories that need to be acquired by the museum or pulled from its storage areas for use in the project. You may want to create/illustrate a typical textile from the period or wall decorations using designs you have learned were prevalent during that era. The vignettes should be created in such a way that the differences between each of the eras is readily identifiable.

You will submit this assignment through the Portfolio application discussed on the first day of class.  Check Forms on the left hand side of screen for instructions as to how to develop and submit work to your individual portfolio.

Design Project

Design Project 5: The museum is now creating an exhibition on the English periods of design (Tudor/Elizabethan, Jacobean; Queen Anne/Carolean/Wm. & Mary; and Georgian).  You are to create a vignette of a typical English interior for each of the 3 periods.  You will need to research using historical web-sites to view typical period interiors and the types of furniture and accessories (including art work) used.  Create a virtual project board showing a plan for each vignette to be created, the pieces of historical furniture and accessories that need to be acquired by the museum or pulled from its storage areas for use in the project. You may want to create/illustrate a typical textile from the period or wall decorations using designs you have learned were prevalent during that era. The vignettes should be created in such a way that the differences between each of the eras is readily identifiable.
